An opportunity has arisen within Roads & Infrastructure, based at Waverley Court but currently a hybrid working style between home and the office.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic graduate engineer to undertake this challenging but highly rewarding role. The successful candidate should have an interest in bridge works, and previous experience will be beneficial. The Council's vast array of over 500 interesting bridges and other structures is an excellent platform to develop your career, and support towards Chartered Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers is available from other Chartered Engineers within the team. Many aspects of the work detailed below will be under the supervision of a Chartered Engineer.

Our forward-thinking and carbon-conscious team is embracing technologies such as GIS, information modelling, laser scanning, drone surveys, and digital asset management including use of mobile devices. The successful candidate will be able to influence the future direction of this work in conjunction with external consultancies and contractors, whilst in a Client role. The role may offer the opportunity to experience working within the flood prevention, roads, or street lighting teams.

Duties may include:

  • inspection of structures;
  • preparationof principal bridge inspection reports;
  • bridge assessments (calculation of load carrying capacity);
  • design of bridge maintenance works;
  • design of bridge strengthening works;
  • preparation of contract documentation;
  • procurement and management of contractors and consultants;
  • drafting technical and non-technical reports;
  • attendance at community and stakeholder meetings;
  • liaisons with external bodies such as Network Rail;
  • deputising for Engineers and the Senior Engineer within the team;
  • maintaining bridge records using the team's asset management database;
  • Preparation of engineering sketches and drawings;
  • Risk assessments;
  • Site Supervision;
  • Response to structural emergencies such as collapsed cellars, bridge strikes etc;
  • Co-ordination of retaining wall inspections
  • Responding to FOI;
  • Budgetary control on discrete projects;
  • Answering correspondence from the public and internal.
  • Undertaking duties under the CDM Regulations

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check prior to a formal offer of employment being made by the City of Edinburgh Council.

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.  For roles in grade 5 or above, annual increments in our contribution zones are dependent on achieving agreed performance goals.
