Would you like to work in a beautiful part of the country boasting expansive coastlines, vibrant communities’ fantastic rural landscapes and the First UNESCO Biosphere reserve in Scotland? Dumfries and Galloway Council has recently declared a climate emergency and is looking for a dynamic and dedicated officer to support the activities to support the council on its journey to becoming carbon neutral, managing and coordinating the response and deliver key outputs.


A Cross party members group and tactical officers’ group of specialists is being established to lead the production of a Dumfries and Galloway Strategic Climate Action Plan (to include the use of a citizens’ assembly) that is tasked with the delivery of the council’s 12 point action plan.


This is an opportunity to work with thematic experts to develop a robust response to accelerate Dumfries and Galloway Council’s de-carbonisation and climate adaptation journey. You will need to be flexible in delivering the role and respond to changing expectations of partners and the community as the project evolves and transitions from the plan-development phase into the delivery phase. The post will be part of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Economy and Development service within the Project Development Team.



Initiate, develop and co-ordinate delivery of policies, activities, and projects to achieve the commitments in the Council’s Climate Emergency Declaration 12-point plan to address climate change issues Work across services and with key officers to develop policy and methods of application to address the Climate Emergency. 

Provide expert support to the Council’s Climate Emergency Cross Party Member Working Group, ensuring a whole-Council approach to addressing climate change, including behavioural change and the development of themed areas of action to support Dumfries and Galloway to achieve net carbon neural status, through the development of a Strategic Action Plan. 

Support the Council’s Environment Champion to promote the Council’s ambitions and to engage with national or professional organisations in this field. 

Coordinate the development and operation of a regional Citizen’s Panel or similar to promote the Council’s ambitions and to engage experts and stakeholders in developing and designing policy.
