An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Council Tax Officer to work within the Council's Revenues & Welfare Support Service.
The purpose of the role of Council Tax Officer is to assist in minimising arrears and maximising income in an effective and efficient way to ensure the Council has the finances to deliver quality services. The Council Tax Officer is also responsible for supporting East Lothian residents who experience difficulty paying their Council Tax, in compliance with legislation, Council policies and procedures.
The successful candidate will be mainly office based, at John Muir House, Haddington, assisting with the billing and collection of Council Tax, helping residents avoid Council Tax arrears, negotiating repayment, promoting Direct Debit and online services and working with the Benefits team to ensure full Council Tax Reduction entitlement. The successful candidate will also have a role to play in the development of the Council Tax service, contributing to service improvement work.
The Council Tax Team works closely with the Council's Benefits service, Landlord Registration, Community Housing, Legal Services and has contact with the Department for Work and Pensions as part of the roll out of Universal Credit in East Lothian.
The successful candidate must demonstrate experience of working within a customer focused environment and will have the ability to work with people who are experiencing financial difficulties. Experience of working in a debt management environment is desirable. Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills are essential.
Responsible for the delivery of an effective and efficient Council Tax service which ensures that the Council has the finances to deliver a high quality service to Council Tax payers in East Lothian ensuring customer is fully supported throughout the process and in compliance with the Council's policies, legislation and plans with a commitment to achieve best value.

HNC/SVQ Level 3 or equivalent level of knowledge and/or relevant working experience
