Midlothian Council seeks to appoint a Roads Officer (Inspector - Technician) to help maintain and improve our public road network. In this frontline role, you’ll inspect, monitor, and regulate operations across the Midlothian Council area, ensuring high standards in the maintenance of carriageways, footways, drainage, signage, and other road infrastructure. You’ll work closely with contractors, utilities, and communities to deliver safe, responsive, and efficient services while supporting the Council’s commitment to sustainability, safety, and customer service.

KNOWLEDGE

Registration as an Engineering Technician with a relevant HNC/HND or equivalent is required in addition to competence to undertake Technican/Engineering support duties is essential. Previous experience in a roads construction environment and the supervision of staff along with knowledge of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 is also required to undertake the job.

Membership of the institute of the Clerk of works is desirable.

To be fully competent in the job, experience with dealing with members of the public, liaising with utilities companies, contractors and the design of road safety and traffic management schemes is required.  The jobholder must also have a thorough knowledge of road materials and construction, demonstrate and understanding of contract procedures and learn the environmental detail of Midlothian.

Please note that it is Midlothian Councils policy that successful applicants will be appointed to the first point on the salary scale.

Based on 36 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £34,207.12 per annum.
