Burial Grounds Officer

35 hours per week
£26,045 - £28,582 (including Distant Islands Allowance)

We are looking for a Burial Grounds Officer to assist the Strategic Policy and Projects Manager in the fulfillment of the duties of the Council as Burial Authority in terms of the Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act 2016 across the Council’s Burial Ground sites.

This is an exciting role which will assist the Council in ensuring that it effectively and dynamically manages its existing burial grounds and plans appropriately for the future. We are currently in the middle of a major expansion programme with associated capital investment in the upkeep of our assets.

You will work across a range of teams, services and communities to bring real, positive change to the management of these culturally and socially important assets. Duties will also include dealing with a range of management tasks and processes that cover the co-ordination of maintenance and inspection work and you will oversee the delivery of programmed work and produce associated reports and records for all the burial grounds across Orkney.

You will manage and review the “Burial Grounds Code of Practice” on an annual basis in consultation with the burial clerks, operational teams, community councils and elected members, ensuring the service meets its national legislation and best practice requirements and/or guidance.

You should be qualified to SVQ 3/HNC in Cemetery and Crematorium Management or equivalent level of qualification in a technical subject and be able to demonstrate effective communication skills for a range of audiences, together with a proven ability to make things happen and to work under your own guidance.

You will be expected to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney including the outer islands to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
