Planning Control Officer

35 hours per week for a period of up to two years and 31.5 hours per week thereafter

£28,947 - £31,848 pro rata (including Distant Islands Allowance)

Development Management is looking to appoint a Planning Control Officer to deliver the Council’s planning enforcement and development monitoring role and to determine basic planning applications and prior notifications.

Some knowledge of building and development issues and an ability to read and interpret plans are essential, as is experience in site inspections and dealing with the public.
Good knowledge of planning legislation, policy and guidance as applicable to development management is desirable.

The ability to deal with breaches of planning control with firmness and tact are vital to this role, therefore we are seeking an articulate and sympathetic communicator with good interpersonal and negotiation skills and ability to deal diplomatically with complaints.

The ability to act on your own initiative, manage and prioritise your own workload and balance priorities to meet deadlines is very important to this role.

The successful candidate will hold a HNC or equivalent level qualification in Planning or other relevant discipline.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
