Senior Projects Manager (ORCA)

Orkney College UHI Archaeology Institute (https://www.uhi.ac.uk/en/archaeology-institute) is seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons for the above post. ORCA is a highly active archaeology projects unit housed within Orkney College, part of Orkney Islands Council and the University of the Highlands and Islands.

The unit provides a wide range of land-based and marine archaeological services in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland region and beyond (http://www.orca-archaeology.org/).

The Senior Projects Manager will be responsible for the inception and strategic management of ORCA’s commercial, outreach and grant-funded activity. The post holder is required to deliver archaeological contract services from project initiation to dissemination, and overall responsibility for the management of ORCA staff in all aspects of their work and professional development. The successful applicant will lead and manage all aspects of ORCA’s work and be responsible for the overall initiation, planning, budgetary control, management, co-ordination and safe implementation of a wide variety of projects, with funding from a diverse range of sources.

Therefore, candidates for this leadership role will have a strong track-record in contracts, budgeting, report checking and team leadership, be able to demonstrate a proven track record of managing multiple archaeological projects, and of delivering timely, cost-effective projects of the highest professional standards. You will be responsible for completing work on commercial and research-based archaeological projects on time and to budget and for getting invoices issued promptly. The successful applicant will be energetic and dynamic, driving business development and initiatives, with a good knowledge of British archaeology and an ability to develop existing commercial relationships and to develop new areas of work and extend ORCA’s client base.

Applicants must hold an undergraduate Honours Degree in Archaeology or equivalent, and be a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists, or an equivalent level of experience and skills commensurate with MCIfA, and a willingness to join CIfA.

The post is based in Kirkwall, Orkney, and the successful applicant will be required to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
