Renfrewshire is one of the larger authorities in Scotland with a population of 170,000 covering both urban and rural communities. Its area attracts major development opportunities and interests including Glasgow Airport, the major Riverside developments at Braehead and Renfrew, and the former Royal Ordnance Factory, Bishopton Community Growth Area together with an ambitious Council-led capital investment programme.

The post is based in Paisley and provides an excellent opportunity for an experienced and committed assistant surveyor to contribute to the Council’s high quality service provision.

The Development Standards Section is part of Communities, Housing and Planning Services, and delivers the Council’s Development Management and Building Standards functions.

We are looking to recruit an Assistant Building Standards Surveyor who will assess building warrant applications, carry out site inspections, determine completion certificates and provide assistance to members of the public on matters relating to Building Standards with a clear emphasis on improvement, performance delivery and customer service.

This post has three salary grades and salary placement is dependent upon the successful candidates qualifications and experience. Subsequent advancement through each salary scale will be determined by achieving defined levels of competency in relation to skills, knowledge and qualifications. The successful candidate will receive structured mentoring and the opportunity for part time study is available.

Entry level candidates should have or be working towards an HNC in a construction based discipline, demonstrable construction knowledge, effective oral and written communication skills, the ability to work as a team member, effective I.T. skills, and the ability to prioritise, meet deadlines and respond positively when under pressure.

For the second grade you should be educated to HND level or equivalent in a relevant subject and have relevant experience within a construction related discipline and have experience of inspecting construction works.

You must also have considerable construction knowledge and effective IT and communication skills.

For the third grade you must be educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject and possess relevant building standards experience and experience of plan assessment and inspecting construction works.

You must also have knowledge of the Building (Scotland) Act 2003 and associated legislation. It is also essential you have effective IT and communication skills.
