Senior Interaction Designer

We are looking for a Senior Interaction Designer to join the Digital Experience team to deliver Renfrewshire Council’s ambitious plan to transform the digital experience offered to internal and external users.

This is an exciting opportunity to bring your passion and expertise for interaction design and work with a talented multi-disciplinary team to shape inclusive and accessible digital interfaces that are dedicated to supporting local communities in Renfrewshire.

As one of the unique benefits of the role, we will aim to sign you up to the Object-Oriented UX (OOUX) Masterclass Certification Program(subject to course availability).

What our Digital Experience vision is

Our vision is to develop a successful digital experience that solves real problems and create positive experiences for our citizens, local communities, and colleagues.

To achieve this, we are adopting a mobile-first, content-first, and object-first approach for any web and mobile applications we want to build, optimise or redesign. The first application we want to redesign is Renfrewshire.gov.uk. Using the GatherContent and Drupal technology, we will develop a new content model and launch a beta version of Renfrewshire.gov.uk in the second part of 2023.

You can read more about our vision and what we’ve achieved so far on The Thread, our digital experience hub.

What the role involves

As Senior Interaction Designer, you will be responsible for designing the best experiences across Renfrewshire.gov.uk and other web and mobile applications. You will establish and apply high design standards, making sure interfaces are usable, accessible, inclusive, on brand, and meet the needs of users.

Among other responsibilities, you will:

  • establish and apply User-Centred Design methods and standards
  • define and drive strategic design directions
  • lead user research processes and activities to understand context, identify user needs, and spot service failures and user pain points throughout the experience
  • frame problems, develop and lead short- and long-term design projects, and ensure the adequate UX resources and approaches are used
  • take responsibility for the development of UX deliverables
  • plan and facilitate tests and experiments with users and stakeholders to validate and refine UX deliverables
  • introduce, iterate, and utilise a design system that includes reusable, scalable, and object-oriented components and patterns
  • negotiate with and influence stakeholders and help them visualise outcomes, prioritise work, define scope and agree a minimum viable product (MVP)
  • provide excellent design advice and support to stakeholders.

Expertise, skills, and qualities we’re looking for

Here are some of the key attributes we’re looking for.

  • Educated to degree level or professional certification in User Centred Design (UCD), UX, interaction design, ergonomics, human factors, human-computer Interaction, applied psychology or any other relevant field, or extensive professional experience in a similar role.
  • Advocate for the User-Centred Design (UCD) approach
  • Analytical and conceptual skills, able to see the bigger picture as well as the fine detail
  • Experience of designing for diverse users, including those with accessibility or assisted digital needs
  • Ability to take initiative and responsibility for UX deliverables such as storyboards, user flows, wireframes, and prototypes.
  • Experience of establishing design patterns, creating design systems, or using existing design systems
  • Experience of conducting user research and testing activities and turning insights into hypotheses, concepts and UX deliverables.
  • Proficiency with current industry design and collaboration tools such as Axure, Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, Miro, etc.
  • Effective at communicating with and influencing all stakeholders
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary Agile teams to design and deliver people-centred services

What benefits you can expect from us

Here are some of the benefits you’ll have.

OOUX training course

Being object-first is key to us. This will help us simplify the complexity of our information and services and create an easier user experience that is matching people’s mental model. This will also create a common language for everyone working on our digital experience, including subject matter experts, content designers, interaction designers, and developers.

To equip you with techniques to break down information complexity and develop effective interfaces that are based on objects as opposed to tasks, we will aim to sign you up to the Object-Oriented UX (OOUX) Masterclass Certification Program. This will be subject to course availability.

We will consider various flexible working arrangements. Contact us if you have any questions .You’re entitled to 20 days annual leave plus public holidays. This rises to 25 after five years’ service, 28 days after 10 years, 29 after 15 years, and 30 once you pass 20 years. You’ll also get the opportunity to buy extra leave days. Our flexi time system means you can work core hours and are able to adjust start, finish, and break times to suit your lifestyle or other commitments. You'll be automatically enrolled in the Strathclyde Pension Fund.

There are lots of other benefits of working at the council, including continual learning, support for working carerscounselling, health and wellbeing support, special leave, 2 paid days leave for volunteering per year, corporate discounts on memberships, tech and other purchases, Cycle to Work Scheme, and more.
