St. Mary’s Primary School (Polbeth) is a denominational school serving the communities of Polbeth and West Calder. In session 2020/2021, the school had a roll of 174 children across 7 mainstream classes and 24 children across 4 Autistic Spectrum Disorder classes (which are nondenominational). The school is staffed by an Acting Head Teacher, 1 Acting Depute Head Teacher, 1 Principal Teacher, 11 Class Teachers, Pupil Support Workers, a PE Specialist, Music Specialists, an Instructor of Brass and a full-time Administration Assistant.  The school currently sits in quintile 2 of the Scottish Index for Multiple Deprivation.  St. Mary’s is an integral part of the local community, enjoying strong links with a number of local organisations as well as Our Lady and St. Bridget’s Parish and St. Kentigern’s Academy and cluster schools. There is a long established and fully supportive Parent Council, who are very active in school, especially in the areas of fundraising and general parental communication and liaison. Improvements in the school and early learning centre are supported by very effective partnership working.

This session, the priority for improvement is to develop excellence through raising attainment and achieving equity and the areas for development will be:

  • Improvement in all children and young people’s wellbeing
  • Raising attainment for all, particularly in literacy and numeracy
  • Closing the attainment gap between the most and least advantaged children
  • Improvement in employability skills and sustained, positive school leaver destinations for all young people
  • Further developing staff skills and pupil supports through the use of SCERTS and MAPA

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Successful candidates will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment and the cost will be met by the candidate.

The fee for a Full PVG Scheme Membership is £59 or Existing Member is £18. The £59 cost(where appropriate) will be deducted from your salary over a 1 or 3 month period by repayment schedule. If your employment concludes before the amount is re-paid in full, the outstanding balance will be deducted from your final salary.
