Job Advert

West Lothian Council would like to invite applications from experienced teaching practitioners who are interested in this exciting opportunity to work as part of our Inclusion and Support Service.

The Inclusion and Support Service (ISS) is a joint team between Education Services and Social Policy working to support children, young people and families with additional support needs. The service includes an education team based at Burnhouse School (Skills Centre) and associated outreach provision, who provide educational support for children and young people aged 0-18.  The ISS also includes social policy teams from the Children and Young People's Team, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Parenting Groupwork and Attendance Improvement Management Service. The ISS is underpinned by the Getting It Right for Every Child approach as we work together to improve outcomes for the children and young people of West Lothian and their families.

The ISS (Education) is led by a Head Teacher and three Depute Head Teachers. There is significant collaborative working opportunities and scope to learn from practice both locally and nationally as we strive to be a sector leading ASN service.

There will be a number of opportunities to work across the secondary sector as well as teaching within Burnhouse School (Skills Centre). Working as part of a large team of multi-skilled ISS practitioners you will be supporting children and young people across various schools to enable them overcome their ASN barriers within a ‘presumption of mainstream’ context.  The teacher will work very closely with the teachers and support within ISS and with staff in mainstream schools and other agencies such as Social Work, Speech and Language and Educational Psychology. The teacher will be a model of good practice to others in a variety of settings across the authority and will also be involved in delivering training to teachers and support staff, therefore excellent communication skills are essential.

If you want to be part of a service that is serious about improvement and aims to inspire better futures for all of its young people, please contact the Head Teacher: Andrew Millar for a discussion of this post - telephone 01506 284755.

Successful applicants will meet the following criteria:

  • Have significant relevant experience as a teacher who has achieved the very highest standards.
  • Have a sound knowledge of current national curricular developments and learning and teaching theory and practice.
  • Be able to evidence a capacity for self-evaluation.
  • Be solution-focused and have the ability to work with a wide range of professionals and agencies in supporting pupils with additional support needs within mainstream placements.
  • Work in direct line management to the depute head teacher and will be supported and challenged by the head teacher.
  • Work in a collegiate manner with colleagues and have excellent inter-personal and communication skills.

We are keen to employ a diverse workforce that reflects the people of Scotland. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and particularly from groups currently under-represented, including people with disabilities, those from minority ethnic communities or from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds

A relevant teaching qualification and registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland is essential.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007.  Successful candidates will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment and the cost will be met by the candidate.  The fee for a Full PVG Scheme Membership is £59 or Existing Member is £18.
