Balnacraig School is looking for a GTCS registered teacher with a science focus who can lead a quality learning and teaching programme to achieve at National 1-5, plus wider achievement awards in a range of subject areas. The individual will also have wide ranging pastoral responsibilities.

Balnacraig provides both residential Care and Education services within a therapeutic and nurturing environment for young people aged 10-17 from across Scotland who have significant and complex additional support needs.

We are looking for a highly motivated and energetic person to join our team with the desire, creativity and flexibility to nurture learning in a multi-agency setting. Working with others the successful candidate will be responsible for developing and delivering high quality learning experiences to support individual needs in the context of the Curriculum for Excellence and GIRFEC. The candidate will have a proven track record of delivering results at national levels in science and a good understanding of Inclusive Education, Additional support for learning and Health and Wellbeing.

Job Description

Overall Job Purpose

Teachers at Balnacraig work in partnership with a range of specialist teachers and care staff, including partner agencies and the local community, to develop and deliver high quality learning, teaching and assessment programmes of study to support the complex additional support needs of young people.

Main Areas of Responsibility

In addition to the duties contained in Annex B of the agreement ‘A Teaching Profession for the 21st Century’ teachers at Balnacraig have the following responsibilities:-

  • A key teacher role to include Care, Welfare and Personalised Support
  • Leading Learning, Teaching and Assessment within the curriculum
  • Collegiate Working and Collaborative Learning

Accountabilities/Responsibilities

Care, Welfare and Personalised Support

  • To promote and safeguard the care, protection, health and safety of all pupils by working closely with other school staff and partners to meet the holistic needs of our young people
  • To be a key teacher for a designated pupils and together with keyworkers, create, maintain and regularly review individual plans to meet the additional support needs of young people
  • To monitor progress with learning, attainment, achievement, attendance and behaviour for pupils
  • To provide on-going personalised support and advice to young people to review their learning and plan next steps, including reviewing targets identified in their young adult plan and recording achievements
  • To support young people to prepare for choices, changes and transitions at all stages of their learning journey
  • To attend network meetings and contribute to integrated assessments and plans for young people
  • To prepare reports for and attend network meetings, Looked After Reviews and Children’s Hearings
  • To develop appropriate home and school links and provide regular feedback to parents, carers and partner agencies about young people’s educational progress

Learning, Teaching and Assessment within the curriculum

  • To prepare and develop teaching and assessment resources to deliver high quality learning experiences across a range of curricular areas: coherent, progressive, engaging and active with clear learning intentions, success criteria and a variety of approaches to meet individual learning needs and different learning styles.
  • Through joint planning with other education staff, care staff and relevant partners, to ensure the provision of an appropriate curriculum with planned coverage of experiences and outcomes across the totality of the curriculum, and to promote attainment and wider achievement for all
  • To assess, record, track, monitor and report on the work and progress of young people and use the outcomes of assessment to identify learning needs, provide feedback on progress and prepare personal learning plans to improve teaching and the learning and attainment for all learners.
  • To prepare pupils for internal and external national qualifications and assist with their administration
  • To develop skills for learning, life and work to enhance and improve positive post-school destinations
  • To ensure regular recording of achievement, celebration of success and up-to-date work of young people is displayed in the classroom and around the school.

Collegiate Working and Collaborative Learning

  • To work collaboratively with other colleagues and professionals – Getting It Right For Every Child
  • Raising attainment and quality of learner’s achievements literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing
  • To work with the local community to assist in the delivery of flexible packages of support for young people
  • To lead, participate and contribute to the wider needs of the whole school community including School Improvement Planning and quality assurance procedures
  • As a reflective practitioner, to engage in professional learning, participate in supervision and Employee Review and Development procedures
  • Undertake appropriate and agreed Continuing Professional Development

Salary as per current teacher pay scales
Working hours as per National Agreement
Scottish Teachers Pension Scheme
Holidays and In Service days as agreed in the Balnacraig Teachers Working agreement.
Successful candidate will be required to complete an enhanced PVG Disclosure check.
Successful candidate will be required to complete a DVLA check for using school vehicles and own vehicle.
Successful candidate will be required to undertake CALM training and attend regular practice sessions to maintain competence.
