Glasgow Caledonian University is a vibrant, multi-cultural and modern university in the centre of Glasgow and is placed amongst the top 70 universities globally (THE Impact rankings, 2021).  Our welcoming community of 20,000 students, from more than 100 countries, enjoy a wide range of award-winning support services and state of the art facilities across each of our campuses in Glasgow, London, and New York.  Our University mission - with its commitment to the Common Good and core values of integrity, creativity, responsibility, and confidence - is integral to everything we do.

Within GCU, the Glasgow School for Business and Society hosts the Department of Social Sciences. As a school, we seek to develop new critical knowledge about and for wider society and business, informed by our values of social justice, entrepreneurship, global citizenship, and responsible management. Social Sciences is a dynamic and innovative group within the Glasgow School for Business and Society, which is committed to research excellence, public engagement and community empowerment. Among other expertise, it hosts the Scottish Poverty and Inequality Research Unit.

These fixed-term posts have been created through funds raised as a result of the Scottish Government commissioning the Scottish Poverty and Inequality Research Unit (SPIRU) to provide analytical support to local authorities, as they develop interventions to tackle child poverty as part of the national commitment to eradicate child poverty in Scotland by 2030.  These posts afford the successful applicants the opportunity to contribute towards the core work and future development of the Scottish Poverty and Inequality Research Unit.

There is an expectation that the successful candidates will work on campus, although some remote working will not be precluded.

The successful candidates will have a relevant undergraduate Honours degree and ideally are expected to be working toward, or have already acquired, a specialist taught post-graduate qualification in the social sciences.  Although we do not preclude experienced researchers who either have a PhD or are already working toward a PhD from applying, these posts are conceived as development opportunities, which afford opportunity for the next generation of poverty researchers to acquire experience of working in a specialist university research unit, prior to embarking on their research career. The ideal candidate will also be expected to be working toward, or express an interest in working toward, developing a proposal for doctoral research in the field of poverty, inequality, or deprivation. The candidates will have effective interpersonal skills including communication (written and verbal) presentation skills; the ability to summarise and present qualitative and quantitative data analyses; be able to conduct literature and database searches and produce literature reviews; be competent at research-related administration; and be good team players and able to work independently.

Further details on these posts are available by contacting Professor John H. McKendrick, at jmke@gcu.ac.uk or on 0141 331 8221.
