The School is seeking an inspirational, experienced and enthusiastic Teacher of Biology to provide maternity cover in our its successful Biology Department from January 2026.
The Science Department consists of ten teachers and one technician. The Biology Department consists of two full-time teachers and one part-time teacher. There are nine Science laboratories and lessons are taught in modern purpose-built laboratories. In addition, all three Sciences have their own dedicated laboratory for Advanced Higher practical work. All pupils study Integrated Science in Transitus (Primary 7) and First Year. In Second Year, the separate sciences are taught by subject specialists.
The department has run a tropical forest wildlife surveys, coral reef surveys (Mexico trip in 2024 for 30 pupils) and an annual Advanced Higher Biology residential field trip to Millport.
The department’s academic record is excellent. In session 2024-25, 99% of Biology candidates achieved passes at National 5 level, with 69% at grade A. At Higher, 100% of candidates achieved grades A-C, with 76% at grade A. At Advanced Higher, 83% of candidates achieved grades A-C, with 48% at grade A.
In session 2025-2026, out of year groups of approximately one hundred pupils, 56 are studying National 5 Biology in Third Year and 72 in Fourth Year, while 45 are taking Higher Biology and 27 taking Advanced Higher.
The Role
The successful applicant will be a committed and enthusiastic Biology teacher with high standards of professionalism. They will have opportunities to teach both Higher and Advanced Higher Biology. Within the department we offer a Greenfingers / Eco Committee for Transitus - Sixth Year pupils, as well as Future Scientists and Biology Journal Clubs for Sixth Years. The successful candidate should display a willingness to get involved in these extra-curricular clubs.
The appointment will begin on Monday 5 January 2026. Candidates must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and the appointment will be subject to a successful application to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.
