Job Summary

As part of the Scottish Government’s commitment to ensure that there are sufficient placement opportunities for students studying the Allied Health Professions and given the additional pressures brought about by COVID-19, additional funding has been made available to allow us to recruit staff to support the development of virtual and simulated clinical placements across the sector.

You will lead the practice-based learning team in the development and delivery of virtual practice-based learning experiences, simulation and student-led service learning experiences. Supporting the Academic Strategic Lead and Head of School you'll have delegated line management responsibilities for practice-based learning lecturers and any other delegated sub team and assume accountability for their performance. This will involve effectively developing and deploying staff and co-ordinating the work of the teams.

Hours will generally be worked Monday to Friday and you will benefit from 46 days annual leave (pro rata) including 7 days closure over Christmas and 3 statutory days. Whilst we are focussed on educating the next generation of Allied Health Professions, we also appreciate the need to retain skills in the health professions, and therefore this role is ideally suited to anyone who wishes to continue to hold a clinically based role. Alternatively you might be a private practitioner keen to broaden your skillset in teaching and/or supplement your income. If you can bring current, practical experience in the profession to our students, we will aim to consider flexible contract types, such as part time and flexible working to accommodate individual circumstances.

Degree qualified in either Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy or Dietetics and with an appropriate professional registration, you'll be experienced in virtual and real Practice based learning in a University setting and a competent leader of academic staff.  A relationship builder, you will have lead and activity participated in internal/external networks, professional bodies, committees, national working groups and external partnerships.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Academic Strategic Lead.

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Practice-based learning lecturers across Dietetics, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.

PURPOSE OF POST: Ongoing leadership and development of virtual practice-based learning experiences, simulation and student-led service learning experiences. This post will predominantly be responsible for leadership and co-ordination of virtual practice-based learning experiences, simulation and student-led service learning experiences across the subject areas of Dietetics, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy, however will involve other subject areas within the School as appropriate.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Lead, develop, plan and manage practice-based learning for virtual placements, simulation and student-led services across School subjects to ensure alignment with the University Strategy, University Key Performance Indicators, and any requirements of PSRBs and other relevant external bodies.

Oversee the development of virtual practice based learning experiences, simulation and student-led service learning experiences, ensuring appropriate consultation and liaison with relevant stakeholders, including clinical partners, academic colleagues, students and other partners.

Undertake responsibility for the ongoing maintenance and future developments of the practice-based lecturing team i.e., in line with the School Strategic Plan.

Develop, in conjunction with the relevant subject Academic Team Leads, coherent staff development plans to maintain requisite staff expertise in delivery of virtual and simulated practice-based learning, and present these to the Head of School, Senior Team, or relevant Academic Strategic Lead.

Contribute to the co-ordination and compilation of School level reports for practice-based learning and liaise with key stakeholders.

Attend and contribute to local and national meetings regarding virtual practice-based learning and simulation.

Delegated line management responsibility of practice-based learning lecturers, appraising staff performance including EPRs, day-to-day management (timetabling, workload allocation, annual leave approval, sick leave processes etc.).

Ensure the team are effectively communicated with in terms of wider School information.

Undertake responsibility for the ongoing maintenance and future developments of in line with the School Strategic Plan.

Carry out teaching (e.g. via lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, laboratory work, field trips, practicals etc.), and associated assessment duties, or as otherwise required by the Head of School.

Participate in the promotion and marketing of the School and its courses to local, national and international clients, including student recruitment activities.

Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate practical projects. Engage with other staff in and out with the University, in research and professional activities relevant to the post.

Develop and maintain personal expertise in specialist subject areas.

Provide academic and personal guidance for students.

Perform other duties as assigned by the either Head of School or Academic Strategic Lead.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

First level Honours Degree in either Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy or Dietetics with an appropriate professional registration.

Experience

Significant experience of aspects of development and delivery of Practice based learning in a University setting.

Experience of design and delivery of virtual practice-based learning and simulation experiences.

Significant experience of staff co-ordination.

Engagement with relevant external professional body/TLA organisations.

Experience of providing leadership relating to teaching activities.

Experience of managing and implementing projects and strategic initiatives.

Experience of managing deployment, performance and development of staff. Demonstrable authority in communicating the UK-based higher education context, in particular the relationship between key University KPIs, policies and requirements, and the broader obligations placed on institutions by government, etc.

Evidence of leading and participating actively in internal and external networks, professional bodies, committees, national working groups and external partnerships.
