Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Shop Assistant to join our team in the Gray’s Art Materials Shop.

The shop provides a wide and varied range of art products to students, staff and members of the public. We are looking for an enthusiastic and intuitive individual to operate within a small team to deliver a high level of service and establish a strong rapport with customers. It is essential that the successful candidate can demonstrate excellent communication, numeracy and organisation skills.   

Part-time, 14.5 hours per week, term time only (38 weeks per year). Working hours will be Tuesday 10am–2pm, Wednesday 9am–4pm and Thursday 10am–2pm.

Salary on first appointment is normally to the bottom of the scale, although in exceptional circumstances an appointment further up the scale may be considered.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Art Materials Shop manager

RESPONSIBLE FOR: No supervisory responsibility

PURPOSE OF POST: Working as part of the Art Shop team, you will deliver a high level of customer service and advice on a day-to-day basis.


• To guide, inform and assist our customers in the purchase of art materials.

• To process sales through Epos (till system) and end of day cash up

• To process deliveries

• To keep the shop area clean and tidy

• To care for and maintain stock and to monitor stock levels

• To ensure your product knowledge is kept up-to-date

• To support the marketing of the shop and its services

• To comply with University policies and procedures, particularly in relation to shop security, Health & Safety, and the processing of administration

• To carry out any additional duties as may be assigned

Person Specification



Educated to a minimum of Standard Grade level to include English and Maths

Knowledge and skills

Knowledge of Art and Design materials and a passion for arts and crafts.
The ability to learn and retain a high level of product information and be able to communicate this effectively to customers. The team will be on hand to help as you learn.
Good attention to detail.
Ability to use own initiative and work independently as well as part of a team.
A proven commitment to customer service.


Experience in Art and / or Design or other related discipline.
Experience of working in a busy environment.



Educated to Higher level or equivalent to include English and Maths
A college or university qualification in Art and / or Design

Experience of working in a retail environment
Knowledge and experience of Epos
