Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and professional individual to join the Planning and Insight Department as Business Intelligence Analyst. This role is a core to the Department’s role of supporting University enhancement and business improvement to ensure that the University meets its strategic aims.

Robert Gordon University is committed to excellence in teaching and learning and student experience. The Department has a major role in data management, data quality and reporting. To underpin this commitment, a major investment has been made in business intelligence software and you will be responsible for developing high quality workbooks and dashboards to allow a wide range of staff to access relevant data from internal and external sources to identify key messages to enable evidence-based decision making to drive enhanced services.

We are looking for someone who has recent experience of creating data visualisations to meet customer needs. You will understand how best to visualise complex data to enable others to draw their own insights from the reports. You must be able to demonstrate proven effective communication (digital, written and oral) and training skills. You will have excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and accuracy will be important to you. Ideally you will have experience of Tableau and/or Alteryx (or similar) and have a background in working with diverse datasets to derive business critical information.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Business Intelligence Manager

RESPONSIBLE FOR: No line management responsibility

PURPOSE OF POST: To support the delivery of high-quality business intelligence solutions to support the delivery of the University’s strategic aims.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

To link a range of internal and external data sources to Tableau and to create, where relevant, meaningful joins between different data sources.

Work with internal customers to plan and create specific reports and dashboards, relevant multiple data sources (internal and/or external), to support informed decision making.

Undertake introductory training for users to ensure that the solution is used effectively.

To utilise Alteryx to undertake complex data transformations and predictive analysis.

To keep up to date with developments in data utilisation and data visualisation so that good practice can be incorporated into the roll out of Tableau across the University.

To support the implementation of Tableau training to relevant staff.

To act as a reference source for queries and troubleshooting with regard to the use of the Tableau and Alteryx tools.

To undertake any other duties as defined by the Manager.

 

Person Specification

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

Undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area or equivalent experience

Knowledge and skills

Good working knowledge of an existing business intelligence system

An understanding of data protection and its application to statistical reporting

Strong statistical skills

Ability to develop and undertake successful training for a range of users

Ability to work independently, manage time effectively and to prioritise multiple and potentially conflicting workloads

Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to successfully deliver projects

Positive working relationships with a wide range staff

Attention to detail

Ability to work effectively as part of a small team

Ability to be a self-starter with a proactive attitude

Ability to work with tact and diplomacy and maintain high customer standards

Experience

A track record of being involved in projects which provide enhanced services to a wide range of stakeholders

Experience of developing solutions in a business intelligence system e.g. Power BI, ClikView, Tableau

A further qualification in a relevant subject area

Knowledge

Good working knowledge of relational databases, SQL and dimensional modelling.

Knowledge of Tableau and/or Alteryx

Good working knowledge of ETL processes

Experience

Experience of working in Higher Education

Significant experience of authoring reports in Tableau and/or using Alteryx for data analytics

Experience in developing effective data visualisations

Experience of managing a significant institutional or organisational database
