Job Summary

The School of Health Sciences aims to provide dynamic and transformational teaching, learning and research that makes a significant contribution to improving the health and wellbeing of local, national and global communities. As part of the Scottish Government’s commitment to ensure that there are sufficient placement opportunities for students studying the Allied Health Professions and given the additional pressures brought about by COVID-19, additional funding has been made available to allow us to recruit staff to support the development of virtual and simulated clinical placements across the sector.

You'll join our multi-professional team developing, consolidating and delivering our innovative Occupational Therapy programmes to ensure our graduates are ready to meet the needs of a changing health care environment.

This will involve the preparation, organisation, facilitation of teaching materials/opportunities and the assessment of students predominantly related to virtual practice-based learning experiences, simulation and student-led service learning experiences and groups. Part of this role will involve liaison with RGU teaching staff, Practice Educators and other external agencies with a view to extending, diversifying and evaluating practice-based learning.

Hours will generally be worked Monday to Friday and you will benefit from 46 days annual leave (pro rata) including 7 days closure over Christmas and 3 statutory days. Whilst we are focussed on educating the next generation of Allied Health Professions, we also appreciate the need to retain skills in the health professions, and therefore this role is ideally suited to anyone who wishes to continue to hold a clinically based role. Alternatively you might be a private practitioner keen to broaden your skillset in teaching and/or supplement your income. If you can bring current, practical experience in the profession to our students, we will aim to consider flexible contract types, such as part time and flexible working to accommodate individual circumstances.

You will be highly motivated with a degree in Occupational Therapy and appropriate professional registration. Postgraduate qualification to Masters level would be advantageous but is not essential. A background in Occupational Therapy is required with a broad understanding/experience of different specialities and sectors, beneficial.

Staff in the School of Health Sciences contribute to research in the following priority areas: (i) Professional/clinical practice, (ii) Human Performance, (iii) Education; incorporating research on professional, patient and public education as well as teaching and learning research.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Academic Team Lead via Academic Strategic Lead

RESPONSIBLE FOR: No Supervisory responsibility

PURPOSE OF THE POST: To contribute to the development, delivery and coordination of a portfolio of sustainable learning and education development activities related to virtual practice-based learning experiences for Occupational Therapy students.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Participates in the co-design, development, organisation, preparation and delivery of teaching material and support related to virtual practice-based learning experience, simulation and student-led service learning opportunities and groups.

Ensures that the provision of practice-based learning meets both service and professional requirements and supports local opportunity for interprofessional learning.

Increases the capacity within RGU to provide quality practice-based learning and simulation opportunities for pre-registration Occupational Therapy students.

Supervises students on virtual practice-based learning experiences and/or student-led service learning opportunities and exercise groups; this could include supervision of service user/volunteer patient interactions, exercise classes and external agencies.

Delivers simulated learning experiences to students including facilitating sessions, liaising with participants, and debriefing.

Provides tutorial and personal guidance for students specific to practice-based learning experiences.

Carries out designated teaching and assessment duties as required to the School portfolio of courses or as otherwise requested by the Head of School.  Participates in course developments.

Develops and maintains expertise in subject area. Actively participates in research activities (e.g. evaluation of virtual practice based learning experience, simulations, writing for publication, presenting at conferences etc).

Undertakes appropriate administrative responsibilities as required.

Maintains working relationships with other Schools/Department/Units within the University, as necessary, for the smooth operation and continued development of the School and its courses.

Actively participates in and suggests relevant staff development activities.

Engages with other staff, wherever possible, in consultancy activities relevant to the School.

Establishes and maintains relevant professional and industrial links, as necessary, for the effective operation of the School’s course (e.g. engagement in work of external bodies, educational and professional).

Grade 7 Salary Scale: £34,804 – 40,322
Grade 8 Salary Scale: £41,526 – 49,553
Salary on appointment will be dependent upon experience.

Candidates with limited or no prior experience as an academic will be placed on the first point of the Grade 7 scale. Consideration will be given to offering an Academic Attraction Payment (adjusted annually) for those candidates who have specific industry knowledge, skills or, expertise which are required for the position.

First Level Degree/Honours Degree in relevant discipline.

Experience

Varied post registration experience in Occupational Therapy practice demonstrating developed clinical skills within healthcare settings.

Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.

Experience of working across inter-agency and organisational boundaries.
