Job Summary

The Research Assistant will work on a one year Newton Fund project in collaboration with UNAM (Mexico) and funded by the British Council.

The project is focused on the development of support tools for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, specifically pulmonary hypertension, based on the analysis and processing of medical images, deep learning and data science. The main aim is to produce a software which will be transferred to a hospital setting in benefit of the public health sector of Mexico City. A tool of these characteristics will provide significant advantage in the reduction of time and man-hours to diagnose patients, which has a positive impact on the Mexican economy and social welfare.

You should hold a MSc or PhD in Computing Science or related fields as well as having significant research experience carried out in fields such as medical imaging, mathematical modelling, computer vision, pattern recognition or machine learning.

Salary on first appointment is normally to the bottom of the scale, although in exceptional circumstances an appointment further up the scale may be considered.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Carlos Moreno Garcia, School of Computing Science and Digital Media

RESPONSIBLE FOR: No supervisory responsibilities

PURPOSE OF POST: Incorporate as research assistant in a collaboration project with a Mexican partner.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

-Carry out significant research in the fields of medical image analysis, deep learning and data science, to collaborate in a project which aims at developing tools for the modelling and understanding of cardiovascular diseases.

-Execute a work programme under supervision aligned with the project grant.

-Carry out literature review and experiments to produce scientific reports, outputs and academic publications.

-Interact with academical, research and medical staff from the university and the Mexican partners to develop an awareness of the research and the appropriate methodologies to follow.

-Work towards an MRes/PhD degree if applicable and if agreed with the School.

-Undertake other reasonable duties that may be requested by the School.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

Qualifications and Professional Memberships
MSc or PhD in Computing Science or related fields.

Experience
Significant research carried out in fields such as medical imaging, mathematical modelling, computer vision, pattern recognition or machine learning.
Experience in publication of scientific articles in national and/or international conferences and journals.
Experience working alongside a multi-disciplinary team involving health sciences.

Desirable Requirements

Qualifications and Professional Memberships
Membership of national or international societies on related fields (e.g. IAPR, BMVA, SNI, etc.)

Knowledge
Some knowledge of Spanish is desirable to better interact with the collaborators and stakeholders, although this is not mandatory.

Experience
Few years of post-MSc or PhD research experience.
Successful in establishing collaborations, both internally or externally.
Publication track in medical imaging, mathematical modelling, computer vision, pattern recognition or machine learning.
