The post of Head of the Biology Department will become available from August 2021. This is a
fantastic opportunity for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual looking to take the next steps in
leadership to work with a highly committed team, driving forward world class education in some of
the finest new facilities in the United Kingdom. This is a full time, permanent post. The Biology Department has eight members of teaching staff, including the Head of Department and an Assistant Head of Department, and one science technician.
The Biology Department is housed on the second floor of the Wood Foundation Centre for Science
and Technology which is part of a very large and ambitious upgrade of STEM teaching
accommodation. The state of the art laboratory and teaching space is at the leading edge for the
delivery of the highest quality of learning and teaching, and represents Britain’s biggest new science
teaching facility at this level. There are seven purpose built teaching laboratories with ICT and
teaching facilities, a Sixth Form laboratory, a department base and extensive storage.
Biology is taught discretely in S1-S2, National 5 Biology is delivered over two years in S3-S4 and, in
S5-S6, Higher and Advanced Higher courses in Biology and Human Biology are offered. All science
teachers contribute to the teaching of P7 pupils from our Junior School. Presentations are in the
region of 140 at National 5, 80 at Higher, and 45 at Advanced Higher Biology.
Although responsible to the Head of College, the Head of Department’s direct link with the Senior
Management Team is via one of the Deputy Heads.

Salary will be based on SNCT Principal Teacher Scale point 5, together with the Robert Gordon’s
Allowance, currently an additional 4% of salary. Candidates will be expected to be willing to assist with Extra-Curricular Activities and/or Games, and to play a full part in the wider life of the school.
