The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is delighted to invite applications for Heritage Ambassador (volunteer) roles based at the Museum of Scottish Fire Heritage, McDonald Road, Edinburgh.

 

ABOUT THE MUSEUM

The Museum of Scottish Fire Heritage is operated by the SFRS as part of our community Fire Station on McDonald Road in Edinburgh. The museum is our flagship site and represents firefighters from all over Scotland, telling their stories, reflecting the diverse challenges of our different communities and sharing firefighters’ unique ways of life.

 

The main objective of the museum is to celebrate the rich heritage of Scotland’s fire service, exploring and sharing how transformation and innovation has always been essential to effective firefighting. Through our work at the museum, we will promote community safety with a focus on education and really engage with the public we serve. Our aim is to support our communities by enhancing wellbeing, contributing to better places to live and inspiring engagement, debate and reflection.

 

WHO ARE HERTIAGE AMBASSADORS?

Our Heritage Ambassadors are essential to helping the museum reach it aims and objective. From being forward facing to the public to behind the scenes, creating engaging content there are a variety of roles you can get involved in. We are looking for people who genuinely enjoy interacting with others and have a desire to share the history of firefighting from its earliest iteration through to our modern-day service.

 

A patient and approachable manner alongside good levels of communication and desire to contribute to the team would be beneficial in this role. Full training, covered expenses and support will be provided to selected Heritage Ambassadors.

SPECIFIC HERITAGE AMBASSADOR ROLES

We have five volunteer roles; you can indicate on your application if you are interested in more than one role. 

Front of House (provide a warm, friendly, and efficient visitor experience):

- Welcome visitors, provide orientation and answer queries

- Assist in the gift shop

- Operating the till and cash handling

- Undertake basic admin (including scheduling group bookings)

 

Gallery Guide (offer an engaging and informative experience for visitors to the museum):

- Be present in the gallery

- Answer questions about exhibits

- Give guided tours of the gallery

 

Special Events (assist in the organisation and delivery of special events and activities):

- Doors Open Days

- Programmed talks

- School and community workshops

- Seasonal events and activities

 

Digital Content (assist in creating an engaging online experience):

- Write blogs and posts on relevant topics

- Create engaging content for social media

- May be asked to contribute to research on topics and items from our collections

 

Collections Care (on scheduled days assist in our museum collection stores):

- Populate and update our object database and records

- Label and repackage collection items

- Undertake basic object cleaning

- Photograph our collections

 

Applicants must meet the requirements of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme prior to being offered a volunteer post and are expected to maintain this while they are volunteering.
