Our senior leadership roles help ensure around £57 billion of public money is spent wisely in Scotland and that Scotland’s public sector delivers on its performance promises. Our business is financial, performance and best value audit for the people of Scotland.

We are Audit Scotland. We're Scotland’s public sector auditor, independent of government. We employ more than 340 talented professionals who know that their work helps ensure the efficient delivery of public services in Scotland. We believe that public money (around £57 billion a year) should be spent wisely.

There's plenty of change ahead, and the need for robust public audit that provides assurance about public spending and helps public services improve is more important than ever. We want to make sure Scotland makes the very best of the opportunities and that change is delivered well – transparent financial reporting and delivering value for money are key to this.

The last few years have seen unprecedented change in Scotland, the UK and internationally; the UK left the EU, new powers devolved to Scotland, a digital revolution in how public services are delivered, demographic changes in our population and continuing pressures on public services as they recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. With more change to come and a fair amount of uncertainty, public audit has never been more important.

As an Audit Director in our Performance Audit and Best Value group, you will be engaging at the highest levels including across Parliament, Scottish Government, NHS & local government. You will provide strategic oversight of our dynamic audit work programme and ensure our work is relevant, high-quality and makes a difference. Our people are experts in their field, credible and respected by senior leaders and policy makers – and we invest heavily in talent & career development and expect you to be credible and lead by example.

There has never been a more interesting or important time to join us. We offer a rewarding place to work, a supportive and open culture and a wide range of professional development opportunities. Benefits include 42 days of annual leave including public holidays, personal development allowances and flexible working hours. We’ve also been named one of the top 40 workplaces in Scotland and the UK’s ninth best accountancy workplace in the 2022 Best Companies awards.

More about you

Passionate about making a difference to the lives of people of Scotland, you understand how the public sector works (although you don’t need to be working within the public sector). You’re either already operating at leadership level or you’re ready for the next career step.

As a credible leader you will coach, motivate and develop our people. You’ll think strategically and creatively, have excellent programme management skills with the ability to analyse complex problems and deliver practical, realistic and workable solutions. An excellent communicator, you are able to present balanced findings with convincing and persuasive recommendations.

You’re an expert in performance audit and you will be degree qualified and/or have demonstrable and relevant experience, possibly also CCAB qualified.

Should you have any questions about the role not already covered in the information we have provided, we can arrange a confidential telephone call. Email your contact details to our HR team at careers@audit-scotland.gov.uk or call on 0131 625 1500, and we will arrange a convenient time.

How we work

We employ around 340 staff in a wide variety of roles. They work flexibly at home and in the office as well as from audit sites across Scotland. This isn’t your typical work from home or work from office type job. We’re flexible about working patterns and we’ve transformed how we deliver high-quality public audit. We support you to work in the ways that achieve the best results for you, your team and the business, including your physical location and how you manage your hours. Put simply, we trust you to do your job, and want you to have the ability to have a rewarding work-life balance and best support your individual circumstances, be that childcare, adult carer responsibilities or managing disabilities.

We welcome applications from across the UK. Some travel to our offices or client sites will be necessary at times, but you don’t need to live in Scotland to work for us.
