Make a difference at Audit Scotland as a Senior Manager

We’re Scotland’s public sector auditor, independent of Government. We employ around 300 exceptional professionals from different backgrounds who believe that public money should be spent wisely. We know our important work makes a real difference to the lives of Scotland’s people and you’ll play a key role in our audit team.

The last two years have seen unprecedented change in Scotland, the UK and internationally, with continuing pressures on public finances and services. With more change to come and a fair amount of uncertainty public audit has never been more important.

New and increasing responsibilities mean we need to grow, making sure we have the capacity to deliver exceptional service. It also means we are changing the ways in which we work, with lots of opportunities for staff to develop new skills and get involved in new areas of work.

We are excited to be recruiting permanent Senior Managers to lead portfolios of audits in our Audit Services Group, which carries out annual financial and wider scope audits in public bodies across Scotland, and also in our Performance Audit and Best Value Group, which leads on our national performance audits and Best Value audit work.

How you can help us …

We are looking for talented, experienced professionals who thrive on making a difference and are passionate about ensuring public services are run properly for the people of Scotland. We have career opportunities for experienced senior managers in our two audit delivery groups, offering you the chance to lead audit teams and contribute to the leadership of Audit Scotland. You will help to create a better Scotland through our financial, performance and Best Value auditing work and our wider engagement with public services.

Your post will be based in one of our well-located offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness. Our Edinburgh office is 10 minutes from both Waverley and Haymarket stations, and our Glasgow office is only 2 minutes from Queen Street station.

As a senior manager you will lead multiple audit teams to make complex audit judgements and report these in public. This will be across a range of public bodies and services such as health and social care, local government, education, police and fire, and economic development

You will encourage and support your teams to deliver a complex portfolio of high-quality audits to time and budget, and to a world-class standard. You will use your experience and knowledge to make complex evidence-based judgements and recommendations. This will be based on a clear understanding of the important issues and risks facing public sector organisations. You will lead dialogue about these, manage relationships with key stakeholders at the highest levels, build understanding and develop our forward work programme. You will also have a key role in reporting our findings to bodies such as the Scottish Parliament, the Accounts Commission or at local audit committees.

We have Senior Manager roles in both our Audit Services and Performance Audit & Best Value groups. While you need not necessarily have a CCAB, CIMA or equivalent qualification to join our Performance Audit & Best Value team, you must have this qualification to be considered for a Senior Manager role in our Audit Services team or if you are interested in taking on a joint role across both teams.

More about you …

Our audit teams are increasingly drawn together from staff with a range of backgrounds and experiences. This makes sure that we can combine the very best expertise across a range of disciplines. We also place a real emphasis on effective people management, enabling and engaging individuals and teams to make a great contribution. We want to hear from experienced senior professionals with one or more of these backgrounds:

  • relevant professional qualifications, including qualified accountants (CCAB/ CIMA or equivalent) and those from other managerial, financial or public administration disciplines
  • professional, academic or research expertise and experience in areas applicable to the management and delivery of public services
  • experience of working at a senior managerial or professional level within the public or third sector.

Of course, good hands-on experience of financial or performance auditing will be particularly valuable. But not everyone who joins us needs to have this before they arrive. We offer excellent opportunities for learning and development once you are here, if you can show us you have what it takes to be part of our audit team.

You are likely to have extensive experience of working at a senior level within or with the public, or third sectors. Your analytical and numerical skills are excellent. You will need in-depth knowledge of the Scottish and UK political landscape. And you will need a good understanding of how public service performance can be effectively managed and scrutinised, and the methodologies associated with evaluating service performance and supporting continuous improvement. You can present balanced findings and convincing and persuasive recommendations, analyse complex problems and deliver practical, realistic and workable solutions.

You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills; build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders; engage, coach and develop people effectively; and have good project and self-management skills. You take responsibility for your own personal development and set an example to others around you.

Continuing your career here brings fantastic benefits …

Working for Scotland’s public spending watchdog will be challenging. But equally it’s extremely rewarding, so we have put in place a very competitive and attractive package. Don’t just take our word for it, we were awarded 2018 One to Watch status by the Sunday Time Best Companies Survey.

We offer a salary range of £57,973 - £64,296 for our Senior Managers. We’ll be happy to have a conversation about your salary placing and progression as you proceed with your application. If you are interested in part-time working or other flexible working patterns, we’d very much like to speak with you about that too.
