This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in COSLA’s work to develop the diversity of local elected representatives and address barriers to elected office. The post will support the work of our Barriers to Elected Office Special Interest Group (BEO SIG) which involves elected members from each of COSLA’s Political Groups. The BEO SIG seeks to identify changes in culture and practices which will support our aim to promote equality and diversity within local democracy and provides a mechanism for addressing barriers to women and other under-represented groups taking up and sustaining elected office.
The postholder will support the delivery of key aspects of the work of the BEO SIG and capacity building on equality and human rights in COSLA and Local Government more broadly. The role will require a sound understanding of, and commitment to, equality and human rights, as well as specific knowledge of issues affecting women and other groups that are under-represented in local democracy. It will require excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work in partnership with other organisations to deliver on our key objectives.
The post is funded until 30 September 2021 and will be based in COSLA’s Migration, Population & Diversity Team. Secondments will be considered. All COSLA staff are currently working from home due to COVID-19 restrictions, for which necessary equipment will be provided. When restrictions are lifted the post will be based in COSLA’s Glasgow office. Flexibility to travel within Scotland will also be required when COVID restrictions allow.
