Senior Librarian (Gaelic & Outreach) / Trainee Senior Librarian (Gaelic & Outreach), Stornoway
37 hours per week, permanent
£32,509 – £39,493 (Based on education/experience), inclusive of £2,742 Distant Islands Allowance per annum

Leabharlainn nan Eilean Siar is looking for a Senior Librarian (Gaelic and Outreach) to join us on a full-time, permanent contract. As Senior Librarian (Gaelic and Outreach) you will play a key role in supporting the growth and use of Gaelic in the Western Isles. We are seeking a dynamic and experienced professional with excellent Gaelic language skills to lead our outreach team, as well as manage and develop our Gaelic collections, services and programmes. This is an exciting opportunity to make a tangible difference to the development of Gaelic language and culture in the Outer Hebrides.

We are also keen to hear from individuals, who may not hold the formal qualification, that are educated to degree level with transferable skills to apply for the post. You must be willing to undertake a postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Science or gain Certified Professional Registration (ACLIP). You would be supported through the required professional qualification as a Trainee Senior Librarian (Gaelic & Outreach).

The post will be based in Stornoway with travel across the Western Isles.

Key Responsibilities:

Engagement & Outreach:

  • Actively identify, build, and maintain strong relationships with community partners, local and national Gaelic organizations, cultural and heritage groups, and schools.
  • Collaborate with a variety of stakeholders and across CnES departments to promote and support Gaelic language and culture.

 Gaelic Promotion & Accessibility:

  • Develop and manage Gaelic collections within the library service, ensuring that resources are accessible and promoted effectively to a wide range of audiences.
  • Identify and deliver initiatives that encourage the learning and use of Gaelic within libraries, including workshops, events, and educational programs.

 Project Management:

  • Develop a Gaelic Language Plan for the library service in collaboration with key stakeholders

 

Salary for the above post is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance.
