We have an exciting opportunity for a permanent post of Senior Environmental Health Officer within the Pollution Control & Public Health section.

As the 4th largest authority in Scotland, we have ambitious plans to regenerate our communities, build new and develop Smarter Homes, create employment and attract investment to North Lanarkshire by ensuring our local communities and environments are attractive places to live and work. The position is subject to the Council’s hybrid working scheme, with a substantive office address at the Civic Centre, Windmillhill Street, Motherwell ML1 1AB and working on the basis of operational flexibility. You will lead a team responsible for the efficient delivery and administration of planning application responses, pollution control, public health and general environmental health related functions covering a geographic area within North Lanarkshire.

The main duties of the post will include supervising a team of officers, including instruction, advice and administration, exercising the powers authorised by statute and carrying out the duties appropriate to the office as authorised under the legislation administered by the Service and to efficiently discharge the duties and functions of the Service in accordance with Council and Service objectives. Their will be a requirement to act for the Assistant Business Manager (Pollution Control & Public Health) in their absence as required.

It is essential that applicants hold a degree in Environmental Health or equivalent, and the REHIS Diploma in Environmental Health, or equivalent. You must have a substantial work experience within Environmental Health and be able to demonstrate experience in the investigation and control of air quality, contaminated land, noise, planning application responses and other pollution control and public health related matters and a wider range of environmental health work. In addition, you must have the ability to work to specific deadlines and possess excellent communication and IT skills. A current driving licence is essential. REHIS membership is desirable.

The successful candidate will be required to participate in an out-of-hours standby service.
