Our Graduate School lies at the heart of the University’s vibrant research community. It provides an advanced programme of high quality development opportunities for research students, supervisors, early career researchers and research leaders. It acts as a forum to exchange ideas, collaborate on inter-disciplinary projects, debate strategic and ethical issues and share good practice and experiences cross-university. Working together with our Academic Schools and Professional Services Departments, the Graduate School also acts as a social and intellectual hub – promoting the growth and development of researchers and our research community.
The Lecturer in Academic Writing and Researcher Development provides leadership in the delivery, development and design of Academic Writing for researchers, and contributes to the broader Researcher Development Programme in the Graduate School. You will work in close partnership cross university with the Academic Schools and Professional Services Departments in particular related to Academic Development and the Student Experience. The role works with post-graduate research (PGR) students in enhancing their academic writing at all stages of their doctoral journey, and academics and researchers in their research writing activities towards successful publication. You will do this through the development and delivery of an integrated programme of academic writing workshops and writing retreats as part of the broader researcher development programme within the Graduate School.
We are looking for a researcher developer or academic with experience in teaching and developing researchers or academics in Higher Education. You will hold a doctoral qualification or other specialist post-graduate qualification and it would be desirable to be an associate fellow of the Higher Education Academy. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the higher education sector regarding research, policy and practice developments in Researcher Development with an understanding of the pedagogy and the professional standards relevant to researchers including the Researcher Development concordat and the Researcher Development framework. You will have skill and experience in teaching a range of writing genres across research disciplines (for example, healthcare, engineering, business) and different research methodological designs with approaches that incorporate both quantitative and qualitative data. Experience of the development and delivery of blended/online programmes and materials is essential. And you will have high level skills in training and facilitation.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work collaboratively and on their own initiative, have the ability to build and maintain strong networks and relationships and must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Further essential requirements for this role include the ability to be strategic thinking and analytical, identify new trends and take creative and innovative approaches. Active engagement in research or scholarship in Doctoral Education or Researcher Development is essential, with publication and presentation of outputs at national or international events and experience of doctoral level supervision being desirable. It is also desirable that you will have experience of leadership/engagement in national/international Doctoral education developments and networks.
