An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team based at Strathclyde Country Park, Motherwell, with regular work from our other Country Parks at Palacerigg, Cumbernauld, and Drumpellier in Coatbridge where our Countryside Rangers have bases. In this key role, you will lead a team to promote conservation, recreation and environmental education within country parks and the wider community greenspaces across North Lanarkshire.

You will facilitate staff to lead on projects to enhance the biodiversity, access, wellbeing and visual amenity of greenspace sites for the local community and provide support to community groups operating in Local Nature Reserves to achieve these aims. We need an individual with practical experience in carrying out and leading a variety of conservation tasks and activities and managing a team to do so.

The Countryside Ranger team at North Lanarkshire operates a site stewardship system where sites are regularly visited and records of species, and site issues are reported on. Surveys of priority species are also taken forward by the team. Species or habitat survey experience would be a useful skill in this role.

The ability to confidently lead groups of volunteers, young people, and adults is important. Our Countryside Rangers work with a variety of groups, with a range of needs. Experience of health and safety, and risk assessments in relation to working with groups would be useful.

To be a success in this role, you will require excellent communication skills, be customer focused and enthusiastic. With a flexible approach to work you will present yourself positively, be confident and able to stay calm under pressure. You will be an innovative problem solver with the ability to develop strong working relationships within Community Greenspace, across the organisation, and with partner organisations. You will be an effective verbal and written communicator. You will be required to provide educational talks and presentations to a range of audiences and be able to deliver important health and safety information to your team and groups effectively.

With an HNC, SVQ3, or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject, you will have extended knowledge within a relevant field. You must have experience working with the public and leading groups of volunteers. You will also require previous supervisory experience with the ability to lead a team and delegate tasks.

You will require a flexible approach to work and must be willing to work on a rota which involves weekend working. You must also have a current driving licence and be able to travel throughout the area of North Lanarkshire. In addition, you will require to become a Protecting Vulnerable Group Scheme (PVG) member prior to starting this post.

This post is temporary for a period of 18 months.
