To support the care, welfare and education of children and young people with additional support needs (ASN) in accordance with relevant legislation, policy and guidelines.

A Learning Support Worker may be asked to work with any child or group of children either within a department, within a mainstream class or within an early learning and childcare (ELC) setting. They may be asked to work alongside, or with specific guidance from, any teacher within a school. Work around an individual child may be based on an individualised education programme (IEP). This programme is followed by all staff working with the child/young person and may involve working with other professionals and therapists e.g. Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Educational Psychologist, members of the Educational Outreach Service, etc.

Scalloway Primary School is a non-denominational school located in the village of Scalloway, 7 miles from the main town of Lerwick.  The school’s catchment area includes Scalloway, Trondra and the Tingwall Valley as far north as Griesta.

There are 7 classes in the Primary Department and a large Early Years and Childcare Department (delivering up to 30 hours per week).  There are currently a total of 175 pupils on the school and ELC roll combined.  Secondary education for years S1-S6 is provided at the Anderson High School in Lerwick. 

The school is managed by the Head Teacher (Mrs Morag Fox) and two Principal Teachers.  The current teaching staff comprises of 4 full-time teachers and 3 job-shares.  PE, Art and Music are provided by peripatetic specialists with a wide range of additional instrumental instruction timetabled for P5-7 pupils.  Further support is provided by our Support for Learning teachers where appropriate.  A team of Learning Support Workers compliment the role of the SfL teachers to meet the needs of all of our pupils.

  • The grade of this post is F or G
  • Please note that this job is not Career Graded. What this means is that a successful candidate would be employed as either a Qualified or Unqualified Learning Support Worker. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed to determine whether they meet the person specification criteria of the qualified or unqualified Learning Support Worker role. This would determine the salary/rate of pay, as well as what duties would be expected of the post holder during their employment. The Job Profile documents at the end of this advertisement describe the qualified and unqualified roles in more detail.

  • Rate of pay shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £1.4202 per hour
  • Permanent part-time post for 30 hours per week, 39 weeks per year plus 6.24 weeks (pro rata) paid holiday to be taken during school holidays
  • Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made
  • A relocation package does not apply to this post
  • We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland.
