About the Service

St Helen’s Out of School Care has been operating since October 2000 and provides after school care daily from 3pm to 6pm for children between the ages of 4 and 12 years attending St Helen's Primary School in Cumbernauld.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a practitioner to assist our Service Manager in the efficient day-to-day operation of the Out of School Care for school age children living in Condorrat and surrounding areas.

Our desire is to provide a wide range of activities; provide excellent customer care; provide parents/carers with informative feedback on a daily basis; provide a high level of care and supervision, ensuring that every child’s safety, health, well-being and happiness is central to everything we do.

Salary will be determined by the rate appropriate to the level of qualification and hours worked in the direct provision of care, plus some time for administration and preparation which could be carried out remotely.

As an Out of School Care Practitioner, you will:

- Provide leadership, alongside the Manager, support, and supervision of staff, playworkers and volunteers

- Be responsible to the Out of School Care service manager and management committee

- Set up the play space, including moving furniture and play equipment

- Plan, prepare, and deliver quality play opportunities within a safe and caring environment

- Provide comprehensive care for the children, including collecting them from classrooms within the school where necessary and handover to parents or carers at collection time

- Provide an inclusive and welcoming environment that takes childrens’ ages, interests, and abilities into account

- Provide nutritious and healthy refreshments and ensure that hygiene, health, and safety standards are met

- Administer first aid when necessary

- Consult with children and involve them in the planning of activities, snacks etc

- Deputise for the Service Manager where necessary

- Maintain accurate records for staff and children, ensuring compliance with GDPR and Care Inspectorate guidelines

- Develop and maintain good communication with all members of the Out of School Care service, including children and staff, school staff, and parents and/or carers

- Undertake appropriate and relevant training

- Take responsibility for the Health and Safety, Accident Prevention, and smooth running of emergency procedures for both children and other members of staff

- Monitor and maintain a healthy, safe, and secure working environment

- Take part in regular staff and planning meetings [NOTE This can be outside of contracted hours]

- Work within the framework of the Out of School Care service’s policies and procedures, SSSC Codes of Practice, Playwork Principles, and Health and Social Care Standards


Essential

- SVQ Level III/ HNC in Childcare & Education or Playwork or equivalent

- Experience of working with children between the ages of 4 and 12 years

- Excellent communication skills

- Providing and facilitating play

- Ability to work as a team member and demonstrate leadership skills

- Experience of delivering equal opportunities in a play setting

- Understanding the varied needs of children and families

- Appropriate child protection training

- Ability to work on own initiative, using judgement and common sense


Desirable

- Experience of working in a supervisory or management capacity

- Experience of administration

- Ability to use IT-based resources to support play and OSC administration

- Current First Aid Certificate

- Food Hygiene Certificate and Training

- Familiarity with all relevant legislation and frameworks
