Location: Old Aberdeen House, Aberdeen

Duration: Fixed Term for 52 weeks, Full Time

The vacancy requires a professional archivist with a specific post-graduate qualification. This is a specialised role related to the continued delivery of a statutory function at the same time as enabling a major move for the archive collections currently held at Old Aberdeen House. The post will be for a fixed period of time during which the current incumbent of the post will perform higher graded duties to cover a period of maternity leave.

Roles that require PVG Membership

Please note that with effect from 1 April 2023, where a role requires PVG membership, candidates will be required to meet the cost of the PVG membership. This applies only to roles with a full time equivalent salary of £30,000 and above. (Teaching roles and jobs at Grade 11 and above (currently £30,727 per annum / £15.97 per hour)

The Council will pay for the PVG membership cost initially, either £18 for existing PVG scheme members, or £59 for non-members, and this cost will be deducted from an employee’s first FULL month’s salary payment.

Job Purpose:

The purpose of this job is to contribute to the provision and development of Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire Archives by providing professional input to the front-line public service and ensuring a high-quality service to the two local authorities. The role will involve performing surveying and cataloguing work as well as contributing to the service’s active programme of outreach and promotional activities. As part of a closely-knit team, the post holder will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, an eye for detail and the ability to work on their own initiative

​​Qualification at degree level in a subject related to the Archive collections or equivalent experience. ​Recognised post graduate qualification in Archive and Records Administration

The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:

Recognised post graduate qualification in Archive and Records Administration.

The postholder is able to demonstrate:

Experience of working in the archive sector with good knowledge of Scottish history.
IT skills, particularly experience with ‘Calm-Axiell’ cataloguing software and Microsoft
applications.
Able to demonstrate knowledge of archive cataloguing, storage and exhibition standards.
Able to demonstrate a good understanding of the issues involved in the storage and
exhibition of archives.
Able to demonstrate appropriate handling techniques for archival materials.
Able to demonstrate good verbal communication skills and excellent writing skills in
English, including the ability to present information accurately and in a manner accessible
to diverse audiences.
Able to handle information, records and statistics accurately and efficiently.
Well organised approach to work with an ability to work successfully to deadlines and
prioritise tasks effectively.
Ability to work as part of a team or on own initiative.
Ability to communicate effectively with members of the public, staff and colleagues.
Sound knowledge of archival practice, current issues and trends.
A commitment to continuing professional development.
Excellent customer service.
