Outdoor Learning Development Officer - Nature, Climate & Sustainability
Bangholm Sports and Outdoor Education Complex

Salary: £36,312 - £42,717
Hours: 36 per week

City of Edinburgh Council’s Outdoor Learning and Adventure Education team are recruiting a permanent full-time Development Officer to lead on engagement with Nature, Climate and Sustainability.

The successful candidate will take a lead role in developing and delivering a range of programmes and activities to champion and enable staff and learner engagement, with a particular focus on our Wilding Wee Spaces project. Wilding Wee Spaces is an innovative programme for school communities across the city to engage in wilding local spaces. The project aims to empower learners to take positive climate action and increase biodiversity whilst providing authentic, learner-led outdoor learning experiences.

Experience of working with young people, project management and partnership working with third party organisations will be essential in this role. You will need drive, energy and initiative to manage your workload while working within tight timeframes.

Please see the attached Development Officer Job Description. Please note, this is a generic Development Officer job description across the Wider Achievement and Lifelong Learning service.

Please contact us at outdoorlearning@edinburgh.gov.uk if you have any questions about the role.

The role will largely be delivered within normal office hours, but occasional evening and weekend working may be required.

There is potential for the role to be filled by more than one candidate with the hours available shared.

The successful candidate(s) will work at various locations around the city.

This post is part of an ambitious wider recruitment campaign to increase capacity across the Council to support our response to the nature crisis. The Council declared a Nature Emergency in 2023 and are now looking for experienced and motivated individuals to make a positive impact across a range of roles and teams.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

We're committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits that a diverse workforce with different values, beliefs, experience, and backgrounds brings to us as an organisation.

As part of our goal to improve our organisational culture and create a great place to work together for the people of Edinburgh, we want to make sure that we’re bringing the best people into our roles, not just in their skills and experience but also in their approach to work.

To help achieve this, we’re changing the way we interview and assess candidates by moving from a competency-based interview approach to a behavioural and technical (skills for the job) based approach. This new way of interviewing will allow us to assess how you think and how you would bring Our Behaviours of Respect, Integrity and Flexibility into your ways of working.

You can find out more on Our Behaviours web page Our Behaviours – The City of Edinburgh Council
