The Youth Work Service in Dumfries and Galloway are offering an exciting opportunity for an individual who has significant experience in leading work with young people or communities in a Local Authority setting to join an innovative and award winning Youth Work Service to lead a range of development projects over the next 12 months.

 

Our Youth Work Service is dedicated to empowering young people through a wide range of initiatives and support services. We strive to create a positive and inclusive environment where young people can thrive and reach their full potential.


The key responsibilities of the post include:

 

  • Programme Leadership: Lead the implementation of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Youth Participation and Engagement Strategy 2022-2027 and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Strategy 2021 – 2026.

This includes the development of youth development programmes that address the needs and interests of young people relevant to children’s rights and youth participation work (including support to Dumfries and Galloway Youth Council and Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament), Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and wider accreditation programmes, the Champions Board and Listen2Us Youth Advocacy Group (for care experienced young people) and Mobile Youth Work (seasonal holiday programmes).

 

 

 

Requirements

  • Partnership Working: Build and maintain effective partnerships with schools, community organisations, and other stakeholders to enhance our reach and impact. This includes representing the service on a range of internal and external strategic partnerships and groups, and being the main contact for a number of internal Council services, Commissioned Services and National Youth Work organisations.

 

  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Oversee our Health and Safety arrangements, off-site trips and visits reporting, and our services key performance management information which monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of youth work programmes, ensuring continuous improvement.

 

  • Team Management: Supervise, mentor, and support a small team including, casual Youth Workers, support staff and the Wider Achievement Worker, ensuring high-quality service delivery.

 

  • Budget Management: Manage programme budgets effectively, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently and within Council financial guidelines.

 

  • Advocacy and Support: Advocate for the needs and rights of young people within the Council and the wider community.

 

 

The post is a rare opportunity for the right person to get involved in a leadership role within Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Youth Work Service. This post is open to those with a degree level qualification in Youth Work or Community Learning & Development. Applicants must have significant experience in working with young people and be comfortable working within community settings with our most vulnerable young people, managing a range of projects at the same time and working in a fast paced environment.

 

This challenging and stimulating post is part of a wider team of workers developing and supporting creative youth work activity and involvement across Dumfries and Galloway and will report directly to the Service Manager - Young People

 

This post is considered as Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. From 28 February 2011, preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to formal offer of employment being made by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

 

Applicants who have been resident outside the UK within the last 5 years, if offered a position, in addition to a Disclosure Scotland Check, will be required to provide a completed police record check from the police authority in the country or countries in which they were resident.

 

A current driving licence is an essential requirement of this post. However, if you have a disability which precludes you from holding a driving licence consideration will be given if alternative transport can be arranged.

 

This post is fixed term for 12 months to cover Maternity Leave. The post is expected to commence in September 2024.
