Job Summary

Please note this post is temporary to cover maternity leave for six months or until current post holder returns.

 

Salary will be pro-rated for part-time & term-time hours.

The appointment of Classroom Assistants is an essential ingredient of the Council’s drive to raise pupil attainment.

Working 25 hours each week during school term time, you will assist teachers with non-teaching duties including administration, supervision of pupils, preparation of teaching materials and under the direction of the class teacher provide support for learning.

Literate, numerate and with excellent interpersonal skills, you will be able to demonstrate a particular ability to relate to children that has been developed through dealing with them in a controlled environment. Experience of working with children with barriers to learning and challenging behaviour is a feature of this role and you will be required to demonstrate experience of this in your application.

As part of the role you will provide support to children and young people with additional support needs within our school. This will include a range of supports to meet the requirements of both individuals and groups.

The hours will be spread over 5 days and will vary between 8.45am and 4pm. From 8.45am until 9am you will have a presence in the school playground so that you are available to provide Care and Welfare support to our pupils.

When required you will provide supervision for pupils outwith the classroom for e.g. in the playground, corridors, dining area, during PE and organised educational excursions.

You will have a nurturing and personable manner and a proven capacity to establish positive relationships with children and young people.  Experience of working with children and young people with additional support needs and an interest in their development will help progress your application. We require a minimum of one year’s experience of working in a similar role to proceed your application.

You will need to demonstrate excellent literacy and communication skills to meet the requirements of this post.

Our school has specialists in Music and Science. Any skills you have in these areas would be advantageous. A knowledge of computer packages and First Aid training would also be beneficial.

PVG/Disclosure Scotland

The following criteria applies to all roles within East Dunbartonshire Council where PVG/Disclosure checks are essential criteria


Where the post you are applying for is considered Regulated Work under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act, 2007, successful candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme, or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check, prior to confirmation of employment being made by East Dunbartonshire Council.

Please note, successful candidates will be expected to meet the cost of the relevant check which will be deducted from the successful candidate’s first salary payment.

In specific circumstances the payment could be deducted in instalments from an employee’s wages following commencement of employment. Approval in such circumstances will be made by HR Services Lead.

Should an employee leave in advance of the payment being deducted, the full amount will be deducted from the employee’s final salary.

The criteria outlined above will apply to existing employees of East Dunbartonshire Council who apply for roles for which a PVG/Disclosure check is required.
