Job Description

Glasgow Life is looking for a Collections Access Officer (Inventory) to join us on a 35 hours full time, fixed term type contract for a period up to 3 years until October 2027.

Working within the Glasgow Life Museums team on this exciting transformational project of the Peoples Palace and Winter Gardens. The project will develop and create a community-led museum to become one of the world’s most socially engaged and significant local museums. With Glasgow’s social history at its heart, we will reintegrate the glasshouse and museum, to create a dynamic museum offer with new flexible space and facilities that meet audience needs. The building will be restored, will be more environmentally sustainable and help put the east end of Glasgow more on the tourist map.

The role
As a Collection Access Officer (Inventory) you’ll be an integral part of the team. Working within the Collections Management section to manage collection location data, ensuring access to, security and audit of, Glasgow City Council’s museum and library special collections for the Peoples Palace project, in compliance with the Accreditation Standard for Museums. Working on the decant of the building and storage of these collections, tracking collections selected for redisplay as they move for photography, conservation, mount making and display. Improving access to resources through inventory projects across museums and collections to support content development. Setting up the location infrastructure for the redesigned People’s Palace.
The candidate
If you’re interested in joining us as a Collection Access Officer you’ll need:
• Degree in a relevant subject discipline
• Experience of the documentation and logistical requirements of moving museum collections between sites
• Experience of lifting and handling, packing and unpacking museum objects
• Good keyboard skills and database experience: entry, edit and reporting and production of spreadsheets - use of MS office (Word, Excel)
• Knowledge of conservation issues and object marking techniques

Our city-wide contracts mean you will be flexible to work in any of our locations. This post is city wide, you will mainly be working in Glasgow Museums Resource Centre, other work locations include People’s Palace and the Mitchell Library.

This role is working Monday to Friday 9am-5pm
