A permanent vacancy has arisen within the Finance Service for a Benefits Officer to join our Revenues and Benefits Team.

You will work at the Council Offices, Kirkwall, within a small office-based team responsible for dealing with all aspects of administering Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction and Scottish Welfare Fund applications and supporting the functions of the Revenues & Benefits Section. This will include the maintenance of claims, assessing entitlement to Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction and Scottish Welfare Fund applications, as well as responding to customer enquiries face-to-face, by telephone, email or correspondence. You will be encouraged to complete a professional qualification via the IRRV as part of your role.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, customer focused individual. You will be working in a busy environment which will call upon you to respond quickly to changing priorities and will also be a trusted team member in often highly confidential and sensitive matters. You should have experience of dealing with the general public, have a good understanding of office systems and procedures and be able to follow and comply with legislative requirements, policies and working practices.

We are looking for someone who has an SVQ 3 or equivalent qualification (SCQF level 6/7) or, where the essential qualification is not held, a minimum of 3 years’ experience of working in an administrative role is required.

The postholder will be eligible to join the Local Government Pension Scheme which is a career average revalued earnings (CARE) defined benefit scheme for which the employer contribution paid is currently 17.6% representing a benefit from £3,320 to £3,510 in addition to the salary paid.

This post requires Basic Disclosure Scotland clearance.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
