Orkney Islands Council is looking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced practitioner to the post of Head Teacher at Stromness Primary School. We are seeking an energetic and committed primary school leader with good strategic leadership and management skills, who will continue to lead and develop the learning and teaching in the school and secure the best possible outcomes for children.
The new Stromness Primary School is approximately 10 years old and is a wonderful learning environment for children with large, bright classrooms, each with an external door to the outside playground. The school is situated at the end of Stromness with wide panoramic views down the harbour, towards the town itself and the hills of Hoy in the background. It is a stunning place for a school to be situated. Stromness Primary School really is a school in the heart of its’ community. https://www.stromnessps.uk/
The expected school roll for session 2023/24 is 132 in six mainstream classes, mostly composite, from P1-7. A purpose built and spacious Early Learning and Childcare (ELCC) setting is also based in the school. This is managed by an ELCC manager and currently caters for 44 children from 2- 5 years. Stromness Primary School has a committed team of approximately 22 staff who are keen to continue to meet the needs of the children and develop the school further. The school is very well supported by the Parent Council and wider community in Stromness.
Orkney lies eight miles north of the Scottish mainland and is the smallest Local Authority in Scotland. There is a strong cultural life and visitors world-wide are attracted to the scenery, history and archaeology. Orkney is home to a cosmopolitan community of about 20,000 residents and, among its many attributes, offers a safe environment, excellent educational and recreational facilities, a community spirit and exceptional quality of life, with reasonably priced housing.
Applicants must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland. The successful applicant should hold or complete the Standard for Headship within 30 months of being in post.
As Head Teacher you will be part of the Education Service management team and will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of education in Orkney as a whole.
This post is subject to membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme in respect of regulated work with children.

Closing Date: Sunday 29 October 2023
