The Maritime Studies Department at UHI Orkney, known as “The Nav School”, invites applications from a suitably qualified and experienced maritime engineer to deliver and develop training for seafarers, those working in the maritime and renewables sector and young people aiming to join it.

Applicants should hold an SVQ, HND or other SCQF level 8 qualification in an area relevant to the curriculum remit, or have at least five years’ previous relevant experience, and must also hold an STCW Engineering OOW CoC (Certificate of Competence). Knowledge of maritime qualifications and experience in developing others, for example cadets or apprentices, is also essential. The successful candidate will be required to undertake an on-the-job teaching qualification within three years of appointment to enable salary progression.

We are looking for a patient, approachable person, good at communication, to help us develop maritime training.

The Nav School in Stromness has been training local seafarers since 1967 and has always responded to new challenges. Now we would like to address new engineering qualifications in the Work Boat sector relevant to Offshore Wind and Renewables as well as continuing to serve the Ferries and Fishing sectors. We also lead the world in maritime hydrogen qualifications and knowledge of that sector is desirable but not essential as training can be given. We currently hold MCA recognition for the UK’s only Hydrogen vessel crew training.

The successful applicant will lead on qualifications to meet the needs of the new workboat code, offshore wind and renewables sector and other operators. They will also deliver Basic STCW courses, STCW refresher training and other short courses. Importantly they would also be involved in our growing schools’ programme. The Nav School is a friendly, supportive and motivated team, keen to welcome a new member.

An informal conversation with the team leader, Mark Shiner is recommended to find out more.
