Principal Teacher of Guidance

Stromness Academy has a pro-active Guidance Department, who work with a variety of partners to support our pupils to achieve their potential in school and progress to sustained, positive destinations. We are looking for an enthusiastic, organised and empathetic Guidance Teacher take responsibility for one of our “houses”, of approx. 115 pupils in years S1-6, including teaching PSE lessons and supporting pupils in choosing their academic options and applying for destinations after school. You will take responsibility for all matters to do with the welfare of pupils in your caseload, in line with GIRFEC principles. You will have a good knowledge of contemporary issues affecting young people and relevant policy, and experience of supporting young people to make appropriate academic and personal choices. Excellent communication skills, with pupils, parents and staff, both in school and other agencies, are key to this role. A commitment to collegiate working, to school improvement and self-evaluation and to maximising opportunities for all pupils is essential. Stromness Academy is a six year secondary school on a well-appointed campus in Orkney, which is frequently voted the best place in the UK to bring up children. Our catchment area covers the town of Stromness and the West Mainland, a dispersed population with over two thirds of our pupils being bussed into school. The small size of our school (approximately 350 on roll), and our classes, means we know our pupils well and are able to be flexible to meet their needs. Salary will be based on Point 1 of the Principal Teacher scale of the SNCT Salary Tables plus a Distant Islands Allowance. We offer a generous relocation package.
