Role Purpose

An exciting opportunity has arisen within SBc Contracts, Scottish Borders Council's external trading organisation, which delivers a wide range of civil engineering and building projects for both internal council services and external clients.

The Skilled Chargehand plays a key role in the delivery of civil engineering, roads maintenance, construction and infrastructure works undertaken by SBc Contracts. The post holder will ensure that work is carried out safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards within agreed timescales.

The post holder will undertake a wide range of activities including roads maintenance, drainage works, surfacing, groundworks, streetscape improvements and other associated construction projects. Working under the direction of the Works Supervisor

The post holder will ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, risk assessments, method statements and quality and operational procedures, while maintaining high standards of workmanship, productivity and customer service. They will lead and motivate a team, support the development of colleagues, operate specialist plant and equipment where appropriately trained and authorised and deputise for the Works Supervisor when required.

This is a varied and hands-on role suited to an individual who is reliable, flexible and committed to delivering quality services. Work may be undertaken across multiple locations throughout the Scottish Borders and beyond and may occasionally require working outwith normal hours to meet operational demands, including emergency response and winter maintenance operations.

Essential

A basic education (Numeracy and literacy)

First Aid Qualification or obtained within reasonable timescales

Certified relevant machinery and plant use qualification/s (i.e. Lantra certificates, NPTC, SVQ II, CSCS, CPCS or NPORS cards) or obtained within reasonable timescales

A current driving licence and use of a vehicle is an essential requirement of this post. * If you have a disability which precludes you from holding a drivers licence, Scottish Borders Council will take into account its responsibility to make reasonable adjustments to allow for your disability.
