Advertisement Details

The General Purpose Rating is the person on board the vessel who performs the day-to-day seafaring duties on board. The General Purpose Rating (GPR) is under the command of the Master and reports to the Mate or Engineer.

The main duties of the GPR include:

  • Assist the Master and Mate in observing Company operating procedures and maintaining the Safety Management System on board the Tug in compliance with the ISM Code;
  • Moor and un-moor the vessel effectively and safely and to tend moorings so that the Tug is adequately and safely moored at all times;
  • Correctly stow all deck gear, towage equipment and tools about the deck and in designated lockers / compartments;
  • Assist, on deck during towage operations, in passing or retrieval of towage lines / equipment to and from the other vessel;
  • Maintain a clear and safe access to the Tug and onboard, such that all obstructions and spillages are removed promptly;
  • Keep lookout on passage during daylight hours or darkness as required by the Master or Mate and assists the bridge team in the performance of their duties with the particular regard to the prevention of collision, safety or navigation, avoidance of pollution, and alertness to the safety and welfare of passengers when carried;
  • Operate and maintain fire-fighting devices and life-saving equipment;

  • The grade of this post is SCP 31
  • Salary shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £2,742 per annum (pro rata)
  • In addition to the salary shown, there are payable allowances of £18,699.01 per annum (pro rata)
  • Temporary Full Time post for 56.0 Hours per Week , 52 weeks per year
  • Temporary Post until 31 March 2025
  • A relocation package does not apply to this post
  • We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
  • You must have the ability to travel throughout Shetland at short notice and where public transport is limited
  • We are happy to talk flexible working
