Job Description

Environmental Services is seeking to appoint one permanent Trading Standards Officers.

This is an exciting opportunity to join us if you have experience of working in a Trading Standards environment carrying out the duties of a Trading Standards Officer. Your experience should include (but is not restricted to) advising consumers and businesses, undertaking proactive and/or reactive inspections and resolving legal disputes by both formal and informal criminal and/or civil means.

You should have either a Diploma in Trading Standards (DTS) or a Diploma in Consumer Affairs & Trading Standards (DCATS including the Weights & Measures module) (or equivalent) and have experience enforcing animal health and welfare legislation.

We would also consider applications from Enforcement Officers who have experience and/or qualifications in trading standards enforcement and are willing to progress training to complete the Trading Standards qualification.

South Lanarkshire Council has adopted an agile working model and time can be spent working from home and from our administrative base in Hamilton. Applicants must have the ability to travel throughout South Lanarkshire.

Responsibilities

To be a member of an area team, ensuring the effective day to day administration and enforcement of the relevant legislation and that targets and deadlines are met and that all Statutes and standing Orders, Policies and Procedures of the Council are met.

To inspect trading premises and undertake testing, verification, examination and sampling of equipment, goods, services and facilities to ensure compliance with the legislation enforced.

To keep appraised of legislative and technical developments and trading practices within Trading Standards and to liaise with local trade to advise, educate and enforce relevant legislation practices.

To investigate alleged offences against trading standards legislation and prepare associated reports and provide evidence to Court, where necessary.

To provide advice and assistance to consumers with regard to relevant legislation and trading practices.

To assist in the training of Trainee Trading Standards Officers, Enforcement Staff and other staff.

To ensure the keeping of an accurate and timeous record of all work completed and

current, via FLARE, diaries, notebooks and any other methods deemed necessary.

To produce accurate and timeous written reports for Senior Management, Line Managers and others.

To assist in the preparation and presenting of any seminars, exhibitions, displays and projects to both internal and external agencies.

To ensure that the duties and or responsibilities as defined in the Department’s Health and Safety Policy are implemented within the sphere of operation of the post with particular reference at all times to the Health and Safety of employees and members of the public.

To carry out other duties appropriate to the post and in line with the needs of the organisation.
