Glasgow Caledonian – the largest and leading modern university in Scotland is a vibrant, values-led university with campuses in the heart of Glasgow and London. With a strong commitment to high quality education and research which supports the communities we serve, we have strong partnerships with employers to ensure our students get the careers they dream of and deserve.

In 2023 we rocketed into the top 40 universities in the UK in the highly regarded Guardian University Guide, were ranked the UK’s 2nd top performing modern university in the inaugural Daily Mail guide, and entered the highly coveted top 50 UK universities in the 2024 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide for the first time. We are the top performing modern University in Scotland in all three guides. We are the only Scottish university with EcoCampus Platinum accreditation and were ranked second in Scotland for sustainability in the most recent People and Planet league table.

With a wide range of professionally accredited courses and links with over 300 industry partners, we have the highest proportion of undergraduate level graduates in highly skilled occupations (83%) compared to other Scottish modern universities.  Furthermore, 91% of our students are in employment or further study within fifteen months of graduating (HESA 2023). We are Scotland’s leading provider of Graduate Apprenticeships. We are committed to widening participation, helping more people from diverse backgrounds into university. We have transnational partnerships around the world, supporting more than 22,000 students from nearly 120 countries.

Guided by our values – integrity, responsibility, creativity and confidence we transform the lives of the people and communities we serve.

To support our continuing growth, we are seeking to appoint a new Lecturer in Control Engineering, within the Department of Applied Science. The Department of Applied Science in the School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment comprises the instrumentation and control subject areas alongside chemical sciences.  The Department currently offers the following postgraduate programmes: MSc Applied Instrumentation and Control, MSc in Applied Data Science in Engineering and MSc in Environmental Forensic Analysis.  In addition, we have an undergraduate programme in Forensic Investigation.  The Department hosts modules in control and instrumentation at all undergraduate and postgraduate levels for mechanical and electrical engineering programmes (including Graduate Apprenticeship) across the School.

As a Lecturer in Control Engineering, you will have a focus on providing high-quality learning and teaching that is underpinned by scholarly activity. We are keen to receive applications from people who will enhance our delivery of, and reputation in, modern control systems analysis and design as well as the practical implementation of control and instrumentation systems, although expertise in other related areas is welcomed. Applicants should hold a minimum of a BEng or equivalent with significant Control Engineering content and also either have, or be close to thesis submission, of a PhD in an area of engineering closely related to Control.

Lecturers are expected to contribute to the delivery and assessment of existing modules, student supervision, and the enhancement of the student experience across our range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Prior experience of supporting student learning, teaching and assessment in higher education and/or in industry settings is essential. The Department of Applied Science promotes innovation in learning and teaching and, therefore, we are keen to appoint an individual with experience of e-learning and online environments. A higher education teaching qualification and/or Fellow status with AdvanceHE is desirable. The post holders will also be expected to contribute to ensuring curricula are current and compliant with Engineering Council frameworks.

If you wish to know more about these opportunities, or for an informal discussion, please feel free to contact Geraint Bevan, Head of Departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Applied Science on Geraint.Bevan@gcu.ac.uk
