This vacancy is only open to internal members of staff currently on a GCU contract of employment
This is a full time/fixed term contract for 18 months
This post will commence in January 2027
The Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences is dedicated to understanding cell, molecular and systems biology and clinical diagnosis of disease and treatments, and advancing this knowledge through research and teaching. As part of the Research Centre for Health, we have an active and diverse portfolio of research activities that aim to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying a number of long-term conditions, to aid public health and develop targeted therapies for these and associated conditions.
This role will focus on the development and application of a physiologically relevant 3D-printed fluidic model of periodontal dysbiosis. The postholder will establish and optimise simple and complex oral biofilm models, including saliva-derived microbial communities grown under continuous-flow conditions, and characterise these using conventional microbiological methods alongside molecular and microbiome profiling approaches, including qPCR, 16S rRNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis. The validated model will then be used to evaluate current and novel therapeutic strategies, and to determine their effects on biofilm viability, composition, dysbiosis and virulence.
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic individual to deliver an externally funded research post. The role is 5 days per week (1.0FTE) for a period of eighteen months. The successful candidate should be educated to PhD level. The individual should have extensive background experience working within microbiology research, with previous knowledge and experience working and manipulating microbial biofilms desirable. The job role will require outputs and objectives to be delivered in timely and efficient manner and requires previous experience of both oral and written scientific communication.
If you wish to know more about this role or for an informal discussion please feel free to contact Dr William Johnston at William.Johnston2@gcu.ac.uk
