The College offers a diverse curriculum that is constantly evolving. NESCol works closely with industry partners to ensure the skills required in the jobs market are reflected in the courses offered and in the knowledge and experience built by students. More than 6,000 full-time students en-roll each session and through part-time, distance learning, school-college partnerships and our role in the apprenticeship family NESCol typically serves around 20,000 students every year.

NESCol is a driving force in the evolution of traditional industries as well as fundamental to supporting new and emerging sectors. This includes our role in ensuring a workforce equipped to embrace the opportunities presented by energy transition and other key growth areas for the regional economy.

The College is also proud of its links with the city’s two universities, and work particularly closely with Robert Gordon University to ensure articulation pathways in a range of sectors. NESCol has a diverse study body as the destination for around a third of all pupils leaving school in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire but also caters for those already in employment, focused on upskilling or retraining as well as many who are returning to education.

Aberdeen is the third largest city in Scotland, home to over 250,000 people. You may often hear it referred to as the Granite City because of the ancient and imposing granite architecture which very much defines it, acting as the perfect backdrop to such a strikingly vibrant city with its horticulture and green spaces earning it “Best City” in the Beautiful Scotland Awards 2022. Aberdeen is also globally connected, with excellent air, sea, rail and road links. There is also the beautiful, sandy beach which acts as the city’s coastline and proves very popular with water sports enthusiasts and walkers.

Aberdeenshire is home to a beautiful combination of rugged coastlines, towering mountains and rolling fields and farmland. The towns and villages scattered across the area are quaint and charming, each with their own distinct attraction. For those who want to explore the history and culture of the land, there’s plenty to do. Aberdeenshire is home to over 300 castles – that’s more per acre than anywhere else in the UK! You will also find countless whisky distilleries, farmers markets, parks and gardens, as well as stunning woodland walks. If outdoor pursuits take your fancy, Aberdeenshire boasts fantastic areas for hill walking, skiing and various water sports.

Employment and Education

Employment

This prosperous region offers promising job prospects for young people. The average weekly earnings in the area are well about the Scottish and UK average. According to Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce.

Aberdeen city has seen a significant number of business start-ups, with almost half (42%, 293 firms) of all new businesses established in the North-east between April and December 2013 setting up in the Granite City.

The College have numerous links with local employers, meaning that work experience and student placement opportunities are an important part of many of our courses. Employers welcome the chance to take on bright, intuitive and enthusiastic students and give them a chance to gain valuable, hands-on experience in their chosen vocation.

Education in the North East

North East Scotland College is the largest further Education College in Scotland and came to being in November 2013 when two previously individual establishments - Aberdeen College and Banff & Buchan College - merged to become one. Our range of campuses offer access to courses for people across the North East, and our top of the range teaching and training facilities put us at the forefront of further education in Scotland.

Alongside North East Scotland College are the two Universities: The University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University.

The University of Aberdeen is Scotland’s third oldest (founded in 1945) and the fifth oldest in the UK. It is ranked as one of the top 200 universities in the world by the Times Higher Educational Supplement and has produced three Nobel prize winners and shared a fourth. The University holds 400 single and multiple parents and in 2003, it produced 17% of all patents in Scotland. University link (?)

North East Scotland College have an important relationship with Robert Gordon University (RGU) which, in the last decade, has consistently been one of the top universities in the UK for graduate employment. Our degree link programme in conjunction with RGU gives our students the chance to progress in to a university degree course there after two years at college.

Developing the Young Workforce North East

Developing the Young Workforce North East covers Aberdeen City & Aberdeenshire and connects employers, education, and young people to help build the future workforce. It plays a key role in Scotland’s wider youth employment strategy, working with schools, colleges, and businesses to ensure young people are better prepared for life beyond education and can access meaningful opportunities such as jobs, apprenticeships, and further study.

Through employer engagement, school partnerships, and a range of employability activities, DYW North East helps young people develop the skills, confidence, and real-world experience needed to succeed in the workplace. By bridging the gap between education and industry, it supports businesses to build talent pipelines while empowering young people to make informed, ambitious decisions about their future careers.
