Police Scotland continue to improve and evolve a number of our core digital solutions to retain and enhance the capability and flexibility required to address the ongoing and evolving demands on policing and criminal justice over the next decade. The Estates Transformation Programme was approved in 2021 with the objective of transforming every building across the Police Scotland estate, to ensure they fully meet the needs of modern policing. The Estates Transformation Programme reflects our commitment to partnership and creating a modern estate that can attract, retain, and empower our people as well as enabling the use of technology to improve operational effectiveness.

Digital Division will work alongside the Estates Transformation Programme team to transform properties into a new modern network of buildings which will support a digitally enabled service model. We are looking to recruit an IT Principal Engineer to provide the strongest ‘hands on’ technical skills and troubleshooting coaching and advising the wider network Infrastructure team which keeps Police Scotland and Scottish Police Authority at the pinnacle of ICT provision in line with published strategies to support the needs of both organisations.

In this ‘hands on’ role you will be responsible for working with industry experts to write the plans and procedures for managing the ICT Network and Firewall infrastructure estate underpinning all ICT service to Police Scotland and the Scottish Police Authority. This will include provision of designs, as well as building, managing and maintaining the core ICT Network and Firewall infrastructure. Fundamental to those plans will be guaranteeing the availability of network, communications and security solutions; whilst also ensuring reliability, integrity, and confidentiality.

You will be educated to Degree/relevant industry certification level in a related technical discipline or have extensive demonstrable experience in a similar role with some or all of the following - Current certification in relevant ICT Infrastructure technologies, e.g. Cisco CCIE, or equivalent). You must have experience in Managing engineering staff without direct line management and excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate interact and influence at all levels of the organisation.It would be highly desirable to us if you have a detailed understanding of the core ICT systems used in policing.

Currently Police Scotland have guidance in place that allows appropriate roles to be operated on an agile basis, should you have an interest in working more flexibly then we would encourage your application.

This full time post is temporary for 18 months and requires Management Vetting Clearance.

You will work 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 9am–5pm. The post holder may be required to participate in an on call Rota for which an allowance will be paid.
