Join Carr Gomm as an Appropriate Adult in Argyll & Bute and use your skills to help people in your local communities, including Helensburgh, Dunoon, Oban, Campbeltown, Rothesay, and Lochgilphead.
Appropriate Adults provide communication support to vulnerable victims, witnesses, suspects, and accused persons, aged 16 and over, during police investigations and other investigatory processes as set out in the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 2016. You’ll work with people who experience barriers to communication or understanding, supporting them to be heard and supported throughout the process.

Carr Gomm is a leading social care and community development charity providing 24/7 support for vulnerable people across Argyll & Bute. Our Appropriate Adult Service ensures that people involved in the criminal justice system, whether victims, witnesses, or suspects, are understood, supported, and treated fairly.
We support people aged 16+ with communication needs due to mental health challenges, learning disabilities, personality disorders, brain injuries, dementia, cognitive impairments, or neurodiversity. This includes supporting people before formal charges are made and those navigating police procedures.

Who We Are Looking For
We’re looking for people who can respond to call-outs, including evenings and weekends, and who have experience or confidence supporting people with mental health challenges, learning disabilities, dementia, neurodiversity, brain injuries, or other cognitive needs.
You might come from a social care, social work, education, healthcare background or have lived experience supporting vulnerable people. Full accredited training is provided to give you the skills and confidence to make a real difference.
You will be expected to:
- Be available to attend call-outs within 1.5 hours of being contacted (including evenings and weekends). Applicants with a driving licence and access to their own vehicle are preferred as the role covers rural communities
- Work effectively under pressure, sometimes in challenging environments
- Maintain reliability, confidentiality, and a non-judgmental approach
