It’s the reward of helping people. I like helping people and seeing the reward of keeping people out of hospital and living in their own homes.” – Rhona

As a Support Practitioner, you’ll play a key role in helping people live their best lives. Every day, you’ll make a real difference, whether you’re supporting someone with daily routines, helping them settle back home after a hospital stay, or responding to telecare alarms. It’s a role where every day you help people stay connected, independent, and supported in their own homes.

About Us

Carr Gomm is a leading social care and community development charity, supporting people across Argyll & Bute to live independently, safely, and well in their own homes. We are currently recruiting Support Practitioners for the following services in Oban:

Care at Home

Support people with their daily routines according to their individual support plan. This includes meal preparation, medication, personal care, and other practical support to maintain independence and quality of life.

Shift patterns vary depending on people’s needs, from 7am – 11pm.

Homecare

Support people after longer hospital stays, helping them settle safely back at home. This involves close collaboration with social work, district nurses, and other professionals, usually supporting people over a six-week period.

Shift Patterns: 8am – 1.30pm and/or 4pm – 9.30pm.

Responders

Respond to Telecare alarms 24/7, helping people in emergencies such as falls. This fast-paced role involves dynamic risk assessments, quick problem-solving, and using specialist equipment such as ELK cushions.

Shift Patterns: 7am – 3pm and/or 3pm – 11pm, plus 11pm – 7am waking nights.

All Support Practitioners support people to live well in their own homes, building trusting relationships and helping them stay connected to their community.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for people who are compassionate, reliable, and community-minded. Full training is provided, and you’ll be supported to achieve an SVQ in Health and Social Care while you work.

We welcome both drivers and non-drivers. Many roles involve travel across rural communities, so having a full driving licence is preferred but not essential.

You will:

  • Support people with daily activities, including meals, medication, and personal care
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with people and their families
  • Work flexibly across different shift patterns, including days, evenings, and weekends

Contracts: Part-time and full-time contracts are available. If you can’t commit to set hours, we also have Relief Support Practitioner roles for greater flexibility.

Application tip: Please include in your personal statement which service(s) you are most interested in working with.

Why Join Carr Gomm

You will be part of a supportive, forward-thinking organisation that invests in its people. You will have opportunities to shape how work is done through specialist working groups and the Futures innovation programme, within an organisation that proudly holds the LGBT Charter for inclusion.

  • Anti-social hours enhancement of up to £1,241 per annum, when undertaking waking night shifts (11pm-7am)
