Aberdeen City Council is currently in discussions with Trade Unions regarding a proposal to move from a standard 37-hour full-time working week to a standard 35-hour full-time working week.    

Please note:  A decision has been reached, in consultation with our Trade Unions, that all new vacancies will be advertised on a maximum of 35 hours per week, and accordingly, new appointments made on a contract of 35 hours per week. 

Roles that require PVG Membership

Please note that with effect from 1 April 2023, where a role requires PVG membership, candidates will be required to meet the cost of the PVG membership. This applies only to roles with a full time equivalent salary of £30,000 and above. (Teaching roles and jobs at Grade 11 and above (currently £30,727 per annum / £15.97 per hour)

The Council will pay for the PVG membership cost initially, either £18 for existing PVG scheme members, or £59 for non-members, and this cost will be deducted from an employee’s first FULL month’s salary payment.

Job purpose/about the role

To plan, co-ordinate and deliver care, preventative conservation and basic remedial conservation activities relating to Aberdeen Archives, Gallery & Museums collections. The postholder will be expected to balance strategic planning of care and conservation needs with hands on delivery.
The job will also involve responsibility for environmental monitoring of stores and display locations, condition checking objects for exhibitions and loans out and the management of hazardous objects.
The postholder will also contribute as appropriate to collection engagement and access activity.

The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:

Educated to Degree level, qualification in appropriate subject area

Recognised post graduate training in museum practise or equivalent practical experience

The postholder is able to demonstrate:

Care and preventative conservation of museum collections
Safe management of hazardous objects
Handling, use, storage and disposal of conservation materials
Basic remedial conservation interventions, object cleaning and stabilisation
Carrying out conservation and condition assessments
Safe and secure handling, movement and packing of museum objects
Delivering training and skills sharing
Delivering engagement activities
Writing reports and procedures
Supervision of volunteers
