Location: Central Library and McBey Library, Art Gallery
Duration: Fixed Term, 22 months

Roles that require PVG Membership

Please note that with effect from 1 April 2023, where a role requires PVG membership, candidates will be required to meet the cost of the PVG membership. This applies only to roles with a full time equivalent salary of £30,000 and above. (Teaching roles and jobs at Grade 11 and above (currently £31,505 per annum / £17.31 per hour)

The Council will pay for the PVG membership cost initially, either £18 for existing PVG scheme members, or £59 for non-members, and this cost will be deducted from an employee’s first FULL month’s salary payment.

Job purpose/about the role

The Collections Access Librarian will:

  • Ensure the provision and development of digital access to Library and Learning Service resources.
  • Support the development, delivery and use of digital resources and services.
  • Ensure accurate bibliographic records for all physical and digital Library and Learning Service resources.

The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:

  • Degree or post graduate qualification in Library and Information Studues
  • Member of Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP)

The postholder is able to demonstrate:

As a minimum, demonstrate skills and experience in

  • Assisting and supporting service users
  • Digitising materials in a variety of formats.
  • Ensuring health and safety of staffand service users
  • Monitoring and evaluating services
  • Partnership and collaborative working
  • Presentations skills and delivery of outreach to range of partners/customers
  • Project management
  • Selection/procurement of resources/budget management
  • Time management and ability to prioritise 
  • Training and supporting groups or individuals
  • Use of new technologies in service delivery
  • Bibliographic management of resources including cataloguing and classification

As a minimum, demonstrate an understanding of

  • Best practice relating to health and safety in the workplace 
  • Evaluation methodology to continuously improve services
  • Information sources particularly in relation to cataloguing, classification and digitisation of resources
  • Legislation relating to libraries, copyright, data protection and freedom of information
  • Library management systems
  • National and local priorities and initiatives relating to digital access to resources
  • National policies and guidance on corporate parenting responsibilities and the safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children
  • Volunteering initiatives and policies

Demonstrate commitment to

  • Continuing professional development
  • Continuous improvement of services based upon reliable evidence
  • Developing staff to deliver high quality customer focused services
  • Ensuring the Library and Learning Service supports the achievement of local and national priorities
  • Supporting the delivery of the Aberdeen City Council vision for Aberdeen as a place all people can prosper

Other requirements

  • Achieving chartered librarian status within 2 years of commencement 
  • Complete successfully all relevant corporate training within agreed timescales
  • Requirement to participate in continuing professional development
  • Requirement to travel between library sites and locations
  • Requirement to work flexibly as and when required which may include outwith normal operating hours
